I mean, we can distrust both. I’m not clear on what you think happened. Do you not think the person arrested for this is the killer? In any case what is the motivation for lying about the weapon used…?

News@lemmy.world•Iran Makes Veiled Threat to Trump: 'Be Careful Not To Get Eliminated'
6·4 hours agoI never have understood this take. Vance has a lot of evil in him but Trump’s strength lies in having millions of supporters. Vance doesn’t have that. They barely tolerate him. Politics isn’t about just getting into power, you have to have people willing to support your plans. As much as Trump wants it to be, it’s not a dictatorship, and the only reason it looks so much like one is that he has thousands of people in government who will break the law because he wants them to. What reason do we have to think they’d be even half as willing to do that for Vance?

3·4 hours agoAs cathartic as it would be to know trump is dead, yeah you are probably right. It would be excellent though if he could be covertly killed by poison or something, and it look exactly like old age that killed him

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would it take for you to switch to Linux?
2·5 hours agoyeah, reading this thread, it seems like people will give windows infinite leeway, and to switch they need basically all software they already use, especially games, to work on linux and easily. Which is a very tall order. The fact that we’re sitting at about 80% of that very tall order is not good enough for these people.

2·5 hours agoi consider my win7 setup with firewall much more secure than some random person’s win11 box
I was thinking you might say this, and for all intents and purposes, it may be true. But my problem is how you wrote your first comment, stating that it was possible to keep it secured. Short of the very extreme measures you have taken, it’s not going to be secure, and most importantly, most people are not willing or able to take those steps. People may read what you wrote and gloss over details, thinking “I’m doing [a couple random things to increase security] so I’m fine”. They will most likely not be fine, given enough time someone will gain access to their machine.
You did not answer my question about sensitive data. Given you have chats on that machine, there is at least those, and those can be used for identity theft, social engineering, etc. And then there is the issue of the chink in your armor you just revealed – remote desktop. I have the understanding that RDP has had many security vulnerabilities over the years. So that is a significant chink. You likely will never have an issue, but you could. And it would be very likely due specifically to not having security updates from the past years.
Mostly though, I think it is important to spread information which, if erring on any side, causes people to be overly paranoid about data security, not less so.

47·5 hours agoDonald Trump is cancer. Literally couldn’t be a worse person. And he thinks the concept of “qualified” means “is liked by people in power”. If this administration doesn’t depress you greatly, nothing will.
Nothing of real value is given value by this administration. Only money and hoarding it matter, and nakedly so. They’re literally citing greed as why starting a war is ok. “we’re going to make a lot of money” is something actually said out loud by politicians in defense of a war. I cannot imagine how this government could get more corrupt.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would it take for you to switch to Linux?
1·5 hours agoAh so here’s the problem.
how would you get pwned by…
No matter how you finish that question, the answer is “no one has any clue besides the person familiar with some (potentially weird) exploit.” You cannot anticipate how security issues will be used. You may have taken steps to limit the risk but trust me, next to no one else is doing that stuff, and it’s still insecure compared to anything receiving security updates.
You’re saying “I can afford to lose this data” but can you really say there is absolutely nothing sensitive on the device? I’m willing to bet there is. And that data can be copied and used for various nefarious purposes.
I’m curious though, genuinely, why are you jumping through these hoops to keep windows 7?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would it take for you to switch to Linux?
1·6 hours agoMine is not an opinion. The mistake you’re making is thinking it is. It is simply a fact that windows is already insecure as hell, using a version of it that is even more so is not something you should tell people they can or should do. You are advocating for using windows 10 in perpetuity. It is actually an unsafe thing to attempt.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would it take for you to switch to Linux?
11·6 hours agoYou’re focused on it being possible and you’re hand waving the very valid and very major security concerns with “some power users can do it safely”. Nope. Once an os becomes unsupported, at that moment it becomes unsafe as a daily driver. This isn’t my opinion, this is just a sober look at the reality of data security.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would it take for you to switch to Linux?
11·6 hours agoOkay I don’t understand what you mean but it’s irrelevant. An os without updates for 1 year will leave it far too unsafe to use.
You’re wrong though. Using an unsupported os is a bad idea. Being able to do it is not the issue. It’s the fact that it is not at all safe which means it shouldn’t be done.
