The Republican National Committee, newly reconstituted under Trump, has filed election-related lawsuits in nearly half the states. Recent lawsuits over voter roll maintenance in Michigan and Nevada are part of a larger strategy targeting various aspects of voting and election administration.

It’s not a new strategy. But with recent internal changes at the RNC and added pressure from the former president, the legal maneuvering is expected to play an increasingly significant role for the party as Election Day in November approaches. The lawsuits are useful for campaign messaging, fundraising and raising doubts about the validity of the election.

Danielle Alvarez, a senior adviser to the RNC and the Trump campaign, said the lawsuits were one of the organization’s main priorities this year.

Democrats and legal experts are warning about how the lawsuits might overwhelm election officials and undermine voter confidence in the the results of the balloting.

General elections are 2 years apart, why isn’t maintenance mandated on the off years?

Other than the obvious, removing people without enough time for them to know they’ve been removed before the election so they can register again. Why is voter roll maintenance apparently left until immediately before major elections?

You already mentioned “the obvious,” and the article said it. It’s about removing legitimacy. They don’t really care if some of their voters are removed, they care about casting doubt on thr process. For most voters, unfortunately, this means doing this now. We already have processes in place to manage voter roles, and they work. The Republican party is only interested in killing the process. Nothing more.

A friend in Iceland put on a forum we’re both on that he won’t visit any country that isn’t a democracy, “possibly not even the U.S.”

I told him there’s no possibly about it. We started with counting some citizens as only 3/5ths human and when that stopped and those people got the right to vote, everything that can be done to suppress that right has been going on ever since.

If the vote is being suppressed, I wouldn’t call the U.S. a democracy.

It’s a flawed democracy. I’m saying that it’s a democracy just because it is still a long way down, and you don’t want to find out how much worse it can be.

It’s not a lost cause. Yet. Fight.
