Summary
Donald Trump pledged to impose a 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada on his first day in office, blaming them for failing to stop illegal drugs and immigration.
He also vowed to add a 10% tariff on Chinese goods until drug trafficking into the U.S. ceases.
Economists warn these tariffs could drive up consumer prices and inflation.
While violent crime has declined in recent years, Trump continues to link trade measures to border security and drug issues, echoing his first-term trade policies and immigration stance.
Fentanyl, FYI, is used in hospitals and imported legally. I don’t know what percentage of illegal supply is pilferage/theft from hospitals, but if fentanyl is bad, then forbid legal imports. There are a lot of media stories about healthcare professionals being caught stealing opioids. in 2020, DEA investigated 3600 drug theft cases at healthcare facilities.
OTOH, the typical overdose danger of fentanyl is using it accidentally, or it contaminating other opioids. Taking more of a weaker opioid provides the same high, afaik.
Like the new VP’s mom, for example.
