Summary

In North Carolina, Republican lawmakers passed legislation stripping powers from newly elected Democratic officials, including limiting the governor’s authority over elections and judicial appointments.

Critics, including Democratic leaders and advocacy groups, label the moves a “power grab” undermining democracy, citing rushed processes and lack of public input.

Republicans defend the changes as balancing state government. Protesters and lawsuits have emerged in response, while gerrymandering and contested elections fuel broader concerns about democratic erosion.

The controversy reflects wider trends in U.S. state politics targeting checks on majority party power.

Turns out people are willing to abandon democracy before abandoning their belief system. I guess telling everyone else what to believe is more important than just leaving people the fuck alone. I know, it’s a big ask to let people just live their life.

      Democracy is a “belief system”.

It’s status as the default and unquestioned ideology is one of the reasons that it’s vulnerable. The West has tolerated weak and incompetent democracies that bow to capital and are useless to help regular people. Why is everyone shocked when people conclude that it just doesn’t work?
