Last time I was worried about the version was a long time ago, but I remember at one point manually upgrading to 5.6.0 because of some specific feature. Other than that I’ve mostly used the system default ever since I first started working with CGI back in 1998.
I still use it for the simple reason that it’s the language I know best, and I can hack together what I need without reading up documentation in order to invoke whatever superstitious practices some languages consider “good karma” (looking at you there, python).
I would show you the laughable perl code I’m working on these days, but there’s a 50/50 chance it’ll backfire and make your day worse.
