Downtown Houston in 1970s was a massive parking lot. It was estimated that nearly 50% of the downtown land area was dedicated solely to parking.

What would you park there for? To visit the other parking a couple blocks down?

And how would you get from your car to any actual place? Another smaller car?

That reminds me! I had friends who lived in a small town and would drive to the city to work. They were complaining about spending half an hour looking for parking every day or pay the $25 all-day parking lot fee. They were walking distances near the train, so I recommended that to them as an option.

What does this car brain do? They DRIVE to the train station one stop away from the job, and park there for free. Then ride the 2 minutes (one stop) to work.

Here is a modern view, it’s taken from quite a bit further back, a bit further right, and angled a bit further left compared to the photo in the OP, but you can identify the Highway 69 on the left and the duo of dark towers (Fullbright Tower and 2 Houston Center)

Isn’t this the city that’s proud it technically doesn’t have zoning laws?

Wheres the down town? Those 3-4 tallish buildings?

Was there even a difference in density between downtown and the suburbs? 😅

Suburbs were probably somehow more dense.

Up to about 2015, downtown Dallas was like that too. Then a lot of the spaces sold to become mixed use high rises.

So is it better or worse now? Seems like there’s been a ton of growth, so there was an opportunity to make it better, or far worse

It’s much better now- it’s all parking garages with buildings on top. Shocking lack of street life.
