That person was literally an American though. I suspect they don’t have another country they can legally stay in long term.

Yeah asylum still has to be granted by the country you’re applying in. Most countries aren’t going to admit that the US is a 3rd world shithole, so his options are going to be Russia, Iran, China and maybe a few others who don’t mind antagonizing the US.

It’s not necessary for any country to isue a statement that the US is a 3rd world shithole (much as that would be welcome) to provide asylum. Only to provide a statement that the person specifically requesting is in danger would they be forced to return.

You do see how that’s functionally the same thing, right? Countries where journalists need to fear for their freedom or lives ARE 3rd world shitholes. I don’t mean 3rd world shithole in terms of poverty, I mean in terms of the form of governance.

Well, it would have been lots better if you were clearer on that. “3rd world shithole” can be for a wide variety of things, we are sorry to have to say.

And even then, they are not functionally the same things. Countries persecute people for lots more reasons than simply “we are jealous they are good persons”. Heck, Snowden comes to mind.
