I thin we can all agree there is a happy middle ground where the furniture and walls aren’t monochrome but also don’t assault our eyes with information
Replace the patterned wallpapers with a solid paint tone. Decrease the visual clutter.
I’m okay with swapping out the side chairs in the hallway with hall tables, though I’d go with a natural walnut tone rather than the uber dark espresso. Or hell, even a nice glazed black cherry, very warm. I’m also alright with doing away with the 4-post beds. My philosophy is why waste the wood on a footboard and posts out of some misguided search for fanciness? If you’re going to hang mosquito netting or actually do the old fashioned drapes to keep heat in, that’s one thing, but nobody does anymore.
Sorry my woodworker’s hanging out, let me tuck that back in my sock.

I don’t think there IS a middle ground. These are two very distinct historical styles. And if you tried to find a spot in the middle, everything would clash and it would look horrendous.
Did modern houses get super bland? Yes
Do I miss those awful wallpapers? No
