The constant exposure to the horror gave them mental problems, yes. And that is indeed the reason why the gas chambers were built: to mask the naked reality of what they were doing from them.
But the point is: they did it, and they kept doing it. Just more comfortably.
In other words, they conceptually had no trouble killing other human beings by the thousands.
Remember: with MAGA and ICE, the cruelty is the point. Those sickos enjoy this, like the SS before them.
