The SoC appears to be a 7% CPU/GPU perf bump according to Qualcomm. No info on North American compatibility yet.

    As an audiophile, I gotta say that audio jacks needed to die. Often, you would get a much lower bitrate out of the whole system. “Well, the sound card attached to the jack can only do 16bit, so there’s no point in going past that in the OS or motherboard.” With my fairphone 6, I’m a $20 Moondrop dongle away from 32 bit 192 kHz audio, which wasn’t actually possible with most flagship phones before they started dropping audio jacks, and is basically infinity as far as any human ear is concerned.

      As someone who got through audiophilia stage and back, most people do not expect phone DAC to output high-res audio. They just want to plug their wired headphones on the go, without extra clutter.

      You’re very unlikely to hear the difference in a hustle and bustle of the city, and if you want to settle in a quiet place to enjoy your collection in all its glory, you have plenty of better options available.

      Headphone jacks are still absolutely valid for many.

      Most standard DACs in motherboards are already 24/192. Even the cheapest phone or laptop will do that. Not with high fidelity, mind you, but a $20 dongle won’t do a better job.

      On top of that, DACs have lower fidelity the higher the bit depth and sample rate go. On a $20 dongle, the difference may even be big. If you want a DAC that will faithfully output those rates, you’re gonna have to spend $200+, not $20.

      Having an audio jack also doesn’t stop you from connecting your own dongle or external DAC to the USB port, so it doesn’t really change anything.

      The real reason for audio jacks isn’t fidelity and audio quality (even though they will have higher audio quality than any bluetooth earpod). The real reason for audio jacks is convenience. Not having to carry around a DAC or a dongle, being able to use old wired headphones, not having to charge your headphone battery, etc.

      What you said makes no sense at all. You may be an audiophile, but you have very little understanding regarding engineering, apparently. 32bit is pointless. Hell, bit depth itself doesn’t even change much (besides how quickly you can run out of storage xD).

        32 bit is usually floating point and effectively the same as 24 bit for playback. Only makes a difference while recording, but even there just make sure you’re not clipping and you’re back to 24 bits.

          When it comes to listening to music, 16bit is more than enough. There’s no audible difference with 24bit.

      As someone who loved the Samsung Galaxy S series up until the S10, that’s not quite true. Samsung actually built decent DACs into their phones, with the S10 having that 32 bit 192 kHz.

        I’m almost certain that’s not true. I have an S10+, and with an external DAC that displays the bitrate, it caps at CD quality.

      Too bad that stuff is subjective and esoteric as hell. Ten years ago i went down the audio optimisation route for my mixing setup for audio production. I stopped taking it so serious after i read a of a test of some audio production people where the difference between 96khz/24bit and 48khz/16bit was looked into. The result was: when you move some cm out of the sweet spot of your speakers you cannot hear the difference anymore, which is ridiculous.

        Bit rate isn’t subjective or esoteric at all? It’s literally the exact opposite, a measurable quantity that physically limits the quality of the audio.
