Netflux can go fuck in general, but foreign companies not wanting to be forced to subsidize your TV shows isn’t quite Native boarding schools level of attempt at cultural erasure. Get off the cross, we need the wood.

I highly highly doubt streaming companies no longer bumping Letterkenny and Vikings to the top 5 is what torpedoed the trade deal, but politicians clutching pearls, banging the nationalism drum, and crying attack on National Identity plays better than a dry “we couldn’t get the percentages right on potash, lumber, and soybeans”.

Silliness of politician’s posturing aside, this whole trade war is an exercise in Trumpist ego-stroking retardation, I wish you all luck, and us all a return to sanity.

You get it! Certain other countries don’t feel the need to enforce their TV shows via government mandate, and just let the product speak for itself ;-)

Those are the rules in Canada and have been for decades. If US streamers want access to Canadian markets, they get to follow Canadian rules. It’s like Americans can’t fathom a government actually enforcing regulations because the free market brain rot is too strong. Yes, our government actually attempts to defend our domestic industries. No, we won’t make an exception for you.

Of all the arguments to make against the US, criticizing them for not doing enough to protect domestic industry is an odd one. Especially since thats what all these tariffs are about at the end of the day.

For the record I think these tariffs are dumb and im dismayed at the damage they have done to America’s partnerships around the world. But theres no moral high ground between Canada protecting their domestic industries with preferential treatment requirements and America protecting their domestic industries with tariffs.

Sorry, do you actually think those tariffs are designed to protect American industry? You grow domestic industries over the course of decades with careful, methodical growth. You can’t stand up an aluminum plant in 6 months. Canceling and reapplying tariffs every 3 weeks isn’t going to encourage anybody to invest significant capex based on an inconsistent trade policy.

I didnt say it would work- you’re right that they will likely be removed before much long-term investment is made. But tarrifs are absolutely designed to protect American industry. America became a manufacturing powerhouse after tarrifs on european goods were imposed in the 1800s.

By all accounts they were ready to strike a deal till the US decided torpedo the whole thing at the last minute by trying to get Canada to sign a deal handing over control of the country.

Handing over control of the country? First I’ve heard of that, what do you mean?

So neither side has released the details of the trade talks before the talks blew up. But PM Carney, who is not known for bluster or hyperbole, was asked why he was using language that made it sound like Canada is at war, his response was Canada was being attacked.

This comment goes over what was actually said by PM Carney in more detail.

Based on how Trump has treated Canada for the last 2 years and based on how talks broke down entirely, I’m inclined to believe the PM and his negotiators.

Damn, dismantling of Canadian auto and a trade veto is a MASSIVE attack on Canadian sovereignty, not artificially boosting Canadian content! Thank you for the added context!
