Because I’d guess it is–a covered teacup with a misplaced handle, random “generic devices” scattered about, cables that go nowhere…

Any interest is an open call for a replacement image for the server?

Yes, it’s AI. A bit over 3 years ago we accepted community submissions and had a public vote. The submissions were all AI-generated.

We can certainly open up a search for new banner artwork. I propose we start with a discussion post in the Agora to collect submissions for a week or two, and then hold a vote, same as last time. I can make the discussion post later today.

    Old banner discussion: https://sh.itjust.works/post/1022097

    Old banner vote: https://sh.itjust.works/post/1432783
(Unfortunately, some of the image links are broken.)

You’ve got me super interested in how written language and keyboard layouts might develop in a species with less dextrous fingers or I wonder if it’s more likely they would just select to replicate human equivalent dexterity.

Thinking about cats… they could do paw strokes in eight directions, and you can tell where it starts because the ink is thicker there. Then you could make those short and long, 16. You can add a hook in either direction at either end, 64. It would be pretty tedious for them, I think, so it would probably be phonetic, and they’d lean on shorthand.

I don´t know about the keyboard; my cat has no problems using mine.

They were clear it was AI from the start.

The guy held a competition for the image where the stable diffusion community was allowed to participate. Many AI images were put into the competition and this one won.

To be clear this was done publicly. You can still see it in the agora.

As you can see I’m not on sh.itjust.works anymore. Really wish the instance didn’t allow AI that just spat in the face of the real artists that gave their contributions. Doubt anyone’s gonna be wanting to contribute to it though as they’ve shown a love for AI

I’m glad someone said something about it, because I don’t like having to see it when I look at the main page. The uneven fingers disturb me. I’m sure we have a few artists on here that wouldn’t mind their work getting main-page treatment. You could run a contest!

Yeah, 100%, which is why I’m making the case to convince them. If nothing else, I’m letting my voice be heard.

They did run one. AI art had quite a few slots, and this AI slop won. Real art was contributed but didn’t win

Edit: Turns out it was all AI.

Something to remember is that the Threadiverse runs on unpaid labour. Someone donating their time to create art is no different to someone donating their time to run the server or develop Piefed ot whatever.

There’s unlikely to be any exposure from the art anyway, so any artist should only do it because they want to contribute to the ecosystem not because they think they will receive exposure in lieu of payment.

There’s a difference between offering your own labor for free and asking others to donate their time for “exposure”.

There’s no exposure, you’re the one suggesting that is the payment but no one is offering exposure, they are asking for volunteer help to contribute to a volunteer run ecosystem.

Many instances ask people to give their labour for free without waiting for someone to offer. Lemmy.world ran a full interview process to appoint volunteer admins.

This is only ever a problem when the thing they’re being asked to do for ‘exposure’ is normal paid work. In this context nobody is being paid, their work isn’t enriching someone else, they would be contributing like all the lemmy devs, the server operators and everyone else contributing to the operation of the site. Nobody’s approached a specific artist and requested they do this for ‘exposure’, someone’s simply suggested that, oh hey, like everyone else that contributes their time to the site, maybe an artist would like to contribute theirs as well.

Pull your head out of your arse.

I’m asking for the image to be replaced, and suggesting a way to do that. If we do that, and if there’s compensation, can be a later discussion.

It’s the only thing that (very mildly) bothers me about this otherwise great server. I would be willing to donate to a pool so we can commission an actual artist to make us something nice. A community run competition would be great too

I’d be interested in seeing another contest for this. Maybe the contest should be to pick who will design it, and then have the community chip in to pay them to create it. I would donate to see that done

On the one hand yes it’s clearly AI, on the other hand I like the mug with a nipple on top and think any future image should incorporate it. It combines 2 of my favorite things, coffee and boobs.

A lot of AI images involving tech desks and workstations look “cluttered” like this, with no purpose or reason to the set props. Apologies to any artists that draw messy dystopian desks, but this style is super common with generated images in this theme

Since the public perception of AI-art has turned decidedly negative, I’m asking the operators and community if they’d be interesting in updating our gopher with some human-created art. If there is interest and approval, the mods can make an open call or whatever.

      Edit: Updated title.

If someone wants to make an image for free without AI and propose a replacement, then it’s maybe worth voting. Replacing it for the sake of replacing AI is dumb. This is the perfect use for an AI image, it doesn’t really matter what it is and there’s no real budget to actually commission something.

It’s literally the most off-putting thing about the place, seeing that AI slop in the corner. I currently have it ad-blocked. Anything would be better, nothing would also be better!
