I’m getting a lot of questions about KDE becoming an AI desktop that I feel like is answered by my “KDE is not becoming an AI desktop” video.

defeats the point of a CoC (making sure everyone feels safe, particularly minorities who are targeted by fascism)

I’d argue that if we normalize people barging into random threads and accusing others of facism, that would make everybody feel unsafe. Remember that once you normalize this behavior, the fascists can use it too.

… ends up creating a scandal …Very visibly, I might add.

The person who barged in making public accusations, is the one that created a visible scandal. That’s why there’s a proper channel for reports. Precisely to prevent this sort of mess.

Just removing the post without any punishment to the user, just means the user can do it again.

A ban is fairly harsh I admit, but usually bans only happen for repeat offenders. I don’t know the full context here.

Yeah. The point is that it can be a slippery slope. Everybody (myself included, I have to be honest bcs well, I’m a very stupid human after all) will be calling anything we don’t like something fascist, thus making it a worthless term. That’s what actual fascism want.

Thus, we should be way more careful with the use of that word.

Did you know that “fascist” has a meaning?

You are saying: “I don’t want to call people racist, because what if it turns into a slippery slope and everyone is called a racist? That’s what racists want.”

Yeah, it has a meaning, but what I mean is something that actually happens: people often make equivocal fallacies, such as the reductio ad Hitlerum of the reductio ad Stalinum to say “hey, this worker union is fascist because it makes me earn one less penny” even if that’s what not fascism means. Also happens with racism, so your example only makes my point stronger. A lot of KKK are like “NoOOOooOo, but these black bastards are being racist to me because they don’t want me to kill them!”. Just the same. They’re using an equivocal fallacy so they can pass their Troy Horse through.

The fascists don’t care. They’ll work to normalize whatever they want regardless

Why not ban person A? Being a nazi is a rule violation, but reporting people by barging in on unrelated threads (instead of simply contacting the mods) is also a rule violation.

Somebody else can report the nazi via proper channels, and person A learns the proper way to report people.

Bringing an on-going discussion from outside into a thread with which it bore no relationship, The correct way to proceed is to alert mods, sysadmins or another participant in the discussion privately. What happened is akin to someone walking into a restaurant and seemingly randomly punching another patron. They’re going to get thrown out.

Damn what a completely out of touch response. Many people point out that this was basically a badly handled abuse report that a user brought to a main thread instead of reporting, however that does not and never did justify the original and continued ban of the first person to report on it.

I am especially galled by the “and ad hominem attacks on another user (even if it turned out they deserved it).” bit. Dude, maybe someone’s motivations matter. Acting like attacking someone’s motivations are always out of place is part of what lets this kind of shit fester and grow. Everyone has motivations, and a lot of people’s motivations are deeply unsavory.

Bruh my Kubuntu minimal install. Welp. *sigh que sera sera, we all move on sometime.

Thankfully the culture of Linux power users (I am not one) is firmly anti-AI. There are several reasons for this, and not all are altruistic, but it’s the right approach to have. Dummies like me have to use it for commands, codes, and scripts, but I’m not going to be submitting ANYTHING to any kind of actual project, because I recognize my incompetence.

the hysteria is taking on a new life of its own and i guess it makes sense considering how people’s materials conditions are being diminished on our education system as well as our media doesn’t enable us to understand why or how.

Ridiculous anti-AI hysteria is pushed by the AI companies themselves to make the anti-AI side look insane.

And to weaken the FOSS communities I guess. Plain information warfare.

I mean, I’m not sure the hysteria is completely unreasonable. AI does pose multiple legitimate threats and should be used responsibly, and not trusted with certain duties. We’ve also seen that the powers that be treat the world around them like a fratboy treats a drunken co-ed (it’s meant to be disgusting), and that the constant growth demanded by the shareholders leaves no room for ethics, morals, or big-picture thinking.

I use AI. I also built my own for simple tasks. I’ve had a lot of experiences with AI at this point, and its generous to say the pros-cons are a wash. The use-cases I and most normies see is AI expediting an already blazing fast enshitification of everything around us.

your comment seems to imply that i’m a marxist because i’m on lemmy.ml – i’m not (as most arent), but i do understand material dialectics & history well enough to know that hysteria like this never has and never will stop change from happening.

Actually happy with Umbriel + Noctalia. Last straw to KDE is I prefer QT over GTK.
