I don’t really feel anything about it, honestly. I disagree with zoos, completely. Animal rehab and release is one thing, holding them captive is another. If there were no humans around, yeah, they would be likely be dead. Probably food for some other critter. That’s nature, bro. Us intervening and applying human morals is arguably nature, too, but there is a lot more of “other” than us. We can’t just leave the nature be, we gotta perturb it, exploit it, “save” it. It is one of the more disappointing things about humanity.
If you read carefully, you’ll notice I never expressed that the animals need help. I said they shouldn’t be held captive. It is more an indictment of the human than sympathy for the animal. Humans are mega entitled to just do whatever they want with animals. Humans suck.
Yes excellent indictmen on humanst here: Humans save species by keeping the remaining few safe, and also socially comfortable with a supply of puppies.
Let’s be clear, they aren’t saving anything by doing this. This is not conservation. They aren’t breeding or reintroducing these particular animals to the wild after raising them in captivity. They have been extracted from the ecosystem. They are now pets. I wouldn’t be so quick to pat humanity on the back when they are the proximate cause for there being a “remaining few.”
