After looking at the offline payments, feel a little risky and exploitable.
I very much want something like this, and hope my fears will be quelled before it’s official release.
The offline payment is the most ambitious and the most attractive feature of D€ from consumer (no data transfer to PSP) and retail perspective (no PSP fees). It’s also one of the few Tech domains where European companies have leading positions. Giesecke+Devrient from Munich have been pre-selected to implement offline D€. They already have working offline payment products, see their Filia.
I though the same but, tbh, cash can be similarly exploited (people can steal your wallet) but at least your phone has a passcode on it. Maybe there are other, unique ways for this to be explained that cash wouldn’t have that I’ve not thought about.
We’ll see what this actually shapes up to be. I guess not that dissimilar to a hardware crypto wallet?
And the digital euro wallet will have a maximum amount as a limit, so it’s not like people can lose all their life savings.
