Sadly the doggy was probably the reason for the attack in the first place. Black bears will rarely attack people unprovoked unless they have their cubs nearby. Though they can get a lot more aggressive if there is food nearby and they are starving. A little dog like a Frenchie would probably be an opportunistic snack for a black bear, especially if they first didn’t see its owners nearby.

If you live in bear country and have kids or a dog, you really need to have a fenced in area for them. It won’t keep the bears out completely, but it will stop them from being able to ambush their prey, which is primarily how they hunt for small game. Also, prob a good idea to have a rifle or some bear mace + something that can make a lot of noise readily available. Black bears are usually big old scardey-cats and are really easy to spook off.
