There are different story lines, but the world is one where there is an infection that basically damages the parts of people’s brains that are responsible for morality. They can think and talk, but there is zero impulse control. Lots of rape and murder. It’s pretty fucked. I didn’t read all of what’s out there but what I did read was bleak at best.

What really drove this home for me was when I was looking for nite-lights for my kids bedroom. We had kinda a woodsy theme so I found some cute mushroom looking ones. Reading the reviews for some of them they would break off and expose the wall 110VAC as bare contacts.

Yeah, which makes the burn story kinda flop at the end. It was a good idea, a resource everyone has become dependent on becomes scarce. There was a lot of untaped potential there IMO, but a great premise. Then it gets turned into this asnine root cause. They could have done so much better. Imagine if they turned it into a tragedy of the commons. A warp superhighway wore a crack in subspace and that interacted with a nebula or something. It was a death of a thousand cuts and everyone ignored it. Maybe Starfleet even knew it could happen but ignored it because that’s how they have always done it, and even if Starfleet stopped the cardasians and the gorn etc would still be using dilithum based warp bubbles (excuse after excuse)… Heavy handed, maybe, but more meaningful.
The anticompetitive practice is, sell for the same price here or we won’t sell your game? They don’t want to be undercut, can’t blame them for that.
If they forced exclusivity deals, sure that is anti competitive. If they dictated prices, that would be anticompetitive. If they forced users to buy bundles to get certain games, if they forced a subscription to access games, if they gobbled up every other game seller and closed them down…
We have seen a lot of bullshit in corpo land. I’m not saying valve is perfect, or I love and trust them, but this is pretty weak in terms of objections. I’d rather deal with valve than Microsoft. Then again I was saying that about Google 15 years ago, now a lot less so.
