  • That was a fun read! Thanks for sharing. I especially liked this part:

Speaking of social media, you advocate for practising “corporeal” or embodied politics. That could mean attending a march in-person or voting with paper ballots, all of which is bad news for keyboard warriors. How online are you?

I see social media as kind of a grim necessity—that it’s basically evil and life is elsewhere. I post, but I don’t read comments. I don’t know what my Twitter password is. If you stay offline, it’s like treading water: you may not be improving yourself, but at least you’re not sinking. I want to remember that social media is a different, non-human realm that’s calling out to us all the time, but that we don’t necessarily have to listen to it.

    Like Gollum with the ring.

That’s a funny analogy because a lot of people in the tech world are big Tolkien fans. In addition to controlling our attention, like the ring does with Frodo and Bilbo and Gollum, it’s also turning us from that nice Sméagol character into that Gollum character. I dare you to print this.

    I gotta learn that lesson.

  • Loblaws labelled 35 per cent of all products online as Prepared in Canada.

“[Prepared in Canada] is not a really rigorous standard to meet,” he said.

Unlike a Product of Canada, which means virtually all (98 per cent) of its major ingredients, processing and the labour used to make the food product must be Canadian, there is no similar threshold for items labelled as Prepared in Canada

Marketplace shared its findings with experts who say grocery stores are trying to capitalize on the country’s wave of patriotism, noting that a vague definition of what makes a product Canadian is in the best interest of retailers, not shoppers.

Basically, it seems like we cannot trust the business to do anything in our best interest. We have to continue to do the work. Hopefully The CFIA will create a more rigorous standard for labelling in the near future.

  • On Monday, prominent Democrats including the Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren demanded an investigation of possible criminal corruption involving Starlink, citing “the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision to cancel a $2.4bn contract with Verizon to upgrade air traffic control communications, and to pay … Musk’s Starlink to help manage US airspace”.

The SpaceX and Tesla billionaire denies conflicts of interest. Trump has said if conflicts are found, they will be addressed.

That’s like the fox promising to make sure the henhouse is safe.

I don’t know how there could not be a conflict of interest.

  • Morning:

    • Snooze my alarm at least 3 times.
    • Finally wake up, check for notifications and end up scrolling for 15 minutes.
    • try to get out of bed but instead snuggle my dog for as long as possible or until she needs to be let outside.
    • drink whatever water I have leftover on my bedside table
    • get up finally, pee, brush my teeth, wash my face, put on deodorant, do my hair & get dressed
    • make a coffee
    • leave for work. (If I don’t work, skip steps one and two, and postpone some of step 4 for later)

    Evening:

    • pour a glass of water for the middle of the night when I get thirsty.
    • let the dog out to pee.
    • go pee, brush my teeth, wash my face, get undressed.
    • grab a handful of kibbles and give my dog brushes while giving her snacks.
    • put in lip balm and hand lotion.
    • play all the wordle games before midnight
    • scroll for a while until I decide I’m tired.
    • turn off the light.
    • put on an audiobook for 15 minutes and hope I’m asleep before then.
