I haven’t been to a Star Trek event but having the handlers act abrasive would certainly irritate me as well and it doesn’t matter if I was paying for a photo op or getting it free. I imagine it’s probably a local security group they are contracting so the staff are probably more used to being bar bouncers but someone should give them a speech on the proper way to engage during these types of events.
I’m torn on this one. I want users to migrate to FOSS platforms but at the same time Threads is the best near term solution to drain Twitter users. In a perfect world, I would like the skinheads to stay on Twitter, the attention seeking people to go to threads, and the normal folk to hit Lemmy/Kbin.
The article mentioned the Poseidon providing security but what can it really do? If something happens it will just monitor the status as I thought those didn’t even have weapons.
Dude…Trump actively fought against CA to try and get their fuel standards thrown out. Like actively worked as hard as he could against the environment. He failed since he is chaotic and unorganized with a cabinet of crazies but that’s kinda the only reason.
Switched to Apple Music when Spotify brought him on. Apple Music is not nearly as good from a UI perspective so thinking about Tidal or Amazon Music now. You would think Apple would have a better and more reliable UI at this point.
I would be far more supportive of Android if it didn’t feel like they were trying to recreate the closed Apple system. Android phones have spotty update releases for limited times. If I could just throw on a vanilla Android OS and still get the apps it would be cool. From what I understand, many apps and app stores in the Android ecosystem won’t allow a vanilla OS as it has to be packaged from the vendor.

This is one of my favorite Star Trek episodes I can recall watching in the past few years. Loved the crossover and had no idea what was coming as I hadn’t heard anything prior. Had to scroll through Lemmy to find a post about it just to comment that I loved it.
You hear about so many places getting breached that have now leaked out hashed passwords. At least this site had the foresight to use a modern hashing algo like argon2. So many have had weak hashes and could at least take a page out of proper hashing from this. They could have misconfigured argon2 properties but I’m thinking that as long as they at least used the default method, it will give the decent protection from cracking.
Xeon gang in the house. I picked up an HPE with an E5-2650 v4 on eBay with 64GB memory and some spinning disks for $180. Best investment I have made. It’s the z640 tower so pretty quiet and doesn’t need a rack. Core count has made my life a whole lot easier.
It means that a disk goes bad and you lose the data. Typically there is some form of protection. I use standard raid 10 which is a bit dated but modern approaches like erasure coding are getting more common. Even if it’s JBOD, you should have a copy of the data in case a drive dies. That’s the value of like raid 5 since it gives you most of the drive space and tolerates a drive failure. RAID is available in software but I’m still using older LSI hardware controllers. A RAID1 mirror would basically be similar to just copying files from one drive to another manually. You get half the storage space but don’t panic when a drive dies. The thing is that drives do die. They are viewed as consumables and thus the question is always WHEN not IF they will die.
I signed up for mastodon when he bought Twitter. The challenge is that I never actually used Twitter so I am lost on what to do with Mastadon. I repost and star posts that are fun but can’t figure out how to follow the conversation. Happy with Lemmy since it’s much easier to follow each conversation. Maybe I’m using Microblogging wrong.
This is insane. The data is gone??? Why would you delete the instances? Think about it, they made a terrible decision to just stop services for no other reason than cost cutting. Customers were not fully aware and they randomly deleted everything. While still a horrible solution, they could have just shutdown the instances and had the data available for a period while they assessed the impact but no, they just went straight to delete. That is the most extreme example of incompetence that I’ve seen in a while.
Dudes just out there raw dogging those drives. That takes some guts man. Not sure I have it in me to take an approach like that but it’s something I aspire to. For now, it’s rclone replication.
Sounds like a happy ending. We don’t get many of those these days so going to have to hold onto this one.
Did the exact same thing and switched to Apple Music. Unfortunately for some unknown reason, AM isn’t nearly as good in my experience. I have songs that were working and then come up as unavailable later. The recommendations are terrible like Apple is trying to push what they want me to hear not what I am interested in. Using it on multiple devices is painful as I sometimes try to play it on my win10 machine, my Mac, and my iPhone and it can’t figure out that while I am I lay playing it in one location at a time it thinks I am trying to play more than one simultaneously. Maybe I’ll try Amazon music next. I do wonder if Tidal is any good.
Definitely disagree on this one. Worked a job across the pandemic that was completely virtual and I never met my coworkers in person. A number of us left about 6 months ago due to layoffs but we all flew out to meet up with each other last week and hang out. That’s almost an entire department of folk that now work in different companies taking the time and personal expense to travel and hang out with each other so I’d say a meaningful bond was built. It absolutely can happen, managers just need to be informed on how to do it. If any org should be prepared for this it’s Zoom. This is just being super lazy on the part of Zoom and having a lack of confidence in their own product.
