  • I totally get it. Good luck though, make sure you find a landing space first. WFH jobs are decreasing and are getting much more competitive. They’re also, unfortunately, prone to be suddenly or slowly shifted to in-office positions. Trying to work a mandatory period of WFH into your contract might be useful, but that’ll be pretty difficult.

As long as you are very employable and in the right field you should be fine. Using “transitional WFH” as a way to entice workers is becoming more commonplace and employers are often not transparent about it.

A friend works in HR at a place that hires as “WFH” and doesn’t mention at any point that there is already a timeline in place for two days in office after six weeks and then full time in office after three months. It’s not stipulated anywhere, it’s a “new policy” that comes down… on the same timeline… for every new employee. Lol

  • That’s really only true with the emergency powers of the governors office. Given the power to appoint 40+ commissioners in NYC and the de facto power the mayor exerts over NYC (despite de jure description) is immense. Give the political, police, and financial power of NYC, I would say the mayor still exerts more authority than the governor.

That being said, the governor of NYC has the power to declare a state of emergency and wildly broaden his power to near authoritarian levels. If that were to occur and then the governor and mayor were to somehow end up toe-to-toe, it would be interesting. But in actual practice, I think that might be a more even match up than you think.

  • Vaping isn’t great, but three things: 1) based on comprehensive, independent reviews of the scientific evidence by both Public Health England (the English Government Public Health agency), the Tobacco Advisory Committee, and other agencies, it’s understood to be 95% safer than smoking. 2) second-hand vape is 99% safer than second-hand cigarette smoke, and 3) vaping doesn’t stink in the same way and it doesn’t linger as long.

That being said, the fastest growing nicotine intake method is nicotine pouches like Zyn, which are even safer than vaping, have no second-hand effects, and don’t have any noticeable odor. They also have much less waste and most of it (the fabric pouch and shredded fibers) are biodegradable. Other than nicotine gum and lozenges, I consider that to be the best ideal substitute for smoking by far.

At that point, it’s barely much of a concern at all. Nicotine pouches are safer than alcohol, and I don’t care if people enjoy nicotine. I just don’t like the parts of smoking that affect other people: health burden, second-hand health burden, and smell.

  • Oh WOAH. You just made me understand wtf is going on with the payphone in the scene at the beginning of War Games! He was making the clicks by hanging it up repeatedly. You just unlocked a memory of me and my dad, he loved that movie. That as well as what was going on in that scene! I can’t believe that scene came back to me right now and connected to what you were saying.

Apparently my brain wanted to know how that worked while my conscious brain didn’t really think about it much other than “huh.” At the time. My dad did make me watch it like five times though.
