Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.@slrpnk.net•Zillow Removes Climate Risk Scores From Home ListingsEnglish254·5 days agoThis makes sense to me anyway, since nobody can really assess climate risks right now — just ask the residents of “climate haven” Asheville, NC.

Cooking @lemmy.world•[Discussion] How's everyone's holiday preparation going?English
8·9 days agoFrozen turkeys by me are $0.49/lb, so I now have 3 of them in my freezer.
The MOMA has a lot of artist-created or inspired stuff in their gift shop, just in case you needed some N-dimensional placemats or something for your tablescape.
We are all made of star stuff.
I can write the one output it would generate for all of us:
You are a gen-X or elder millennial male who works in the technology field. You enjoy Star Trek memes and whatever the hell PugJesus posts. You use arch, btw.

retrocomputing@lemmy.sdf.org•They Made a Zip Drive.. for your TV?!English
9·13 days agoThey were basically hard drives where the read and write heads were in the drive itself and the platter was in the zip disc. When it was released it offered 100MB vs the 1.44 you could fit on a similarly sized (but much cheaper) floppy. USB hadn’t even been invented yet, let alone USB thumb drives or SD cards, so it was kinda the only semi-convenient, semi-cheap way to move semi-large amounts of media around. I was a graphic artist when they came out and it was a huge improvement to be able to send a zip disk or two to a printer to print proofs.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What show is weirdly or oddly cozy for you?English
20·13 days agoI will watch a Joy of Painting episode anytime I come across one on PBS (they stream on YouTube but it’s more fun to find it “in the wild”)
They’re hovering over North America. Bert is clearly their US operative. They’re probably about to check in with Roberto down in Mexico after having just finished with Barthelemy in the Canada office.
This could just be an ordinary Tuesday evening on the E train in NYC.

3·17 days agoAs much as I’d love for this to be true, sadly… it’s probably not. But this one guy seems to think they like flute music in the 200-500KHz range. I Did a Thing seems to concur .

science@lemmy.world•MIT Neuroscientist Proposes Brain Waves are the Hidden Engine Behind Thought and ConsciousnessEnglish
322·19 days agoThe main scientist in the article has been working on the problem for over 20 years and has one of the most cited articles in neuroscience. It’s a bit further along than just “an idea”: they already have experimental evidence for some of the simpler mechanisms about brainwave propagation and they’re now working on experiments to try and isolate higher functions.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•cheapest way to connect several SATA HDs via USB?English
3·26 days agoI have one of these. It’s usb 3.0 only which it sounds like is what you have anyway. It’s not part of my NAS, I just use it when I need to quickly look for something on an old drive, but it’s been pretty reliable for me for the last few years and was cheap, so I have no complaints.

We do the fun parts taken from Yule (trees/greenery/lights) and Saturnalia (feasting). I think at this point it’s more a celebration of managing to make it through another year than anything else.
