Lemmy@lemmy.ml•Looking for lemmy hosting service recommendationsEnglish
1·4 months agoYeah, i figured it was probably under priced with our current host, but im not looking to balloon costs 4-5x or something when switching to a new host, hopefully. I’d like fully managed if possible, but yeah, another thought was including people who could look at things in my stead, though I don’t really have a list of people i’m aware of who i could recruit.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Trump Administration Providing Weapons Grade Plutonium to Sam AltmanEnglish
101·4 months agoYes, actually. They’re both different mixes of plutonium isotopes. Iirc reactor grade plutonium is far more stable than weapons grade (because blowing up is less desirable for reactors than bombs), and has some different properties when used.
They also recently did a reprint of the first ~5 or so books in paperback. One of the neat things they did with the reprints is they’ve included dice rolls at the bottom of every page, so instead of needing to use dice, you can flip to a random page instead and use that as your roll.

Programming@programming.dev•I feel like I should know this but seems like no
5·1 year agoi second the comment that you need to consider why you want to do this. You generally need a pretty good reason to split your codebase into multiple languages.
As far as actually doing it, you have a ton of different options, some of which have been mentioned here. Some i can think of off the top of my head:
- create a library (dll or so file or the like)
- set up a web server and use communication protocols (either web socket or rest API or the like)
- use a 3rd party communication/messaging framework like MQ or kafka or something
- create your own method of communication. Something like reading and writing to a file on disk, or a database and acting on the information plopped in
basically every approach is going to require you to come up with some sort of API that the two work together through, though, an API in the generic sense is basically a shared contract two disconnected pieces of code use to communicate.

1·1 year agosame. Ive played it for about ~10 hours on the steam deck so far, and i have my FPS counter turned on at all times; never seen it dip below 40, and i dont think ive touched any settings. On an original steam deck, not an OLED, though

6·1 year agowindows can still play castle of the winds? i play it all the time. In fact, i just booted it up again a moment ago to make sure it didnt break recently or something. I dont remember ever having any issues playing it, and ive played it off and on for decades. In fact, googling real quick, it looks like my abandonware even has a “easy installer” for it.

26·1 year agoIf a user is banned on their home instance, that ban is federated out to all instances. If a user is banned on a remote instance, they’re just banned locally on that instance, and their account remains active for all other instances.
They’re likely some remote users who have interacted enough with your instance to be federated over, and then banned on their home instance.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Does alcohol expire? Specifically whiskey?
24·1 year agoYou’ve obviously gotten the base level answer, but to add some color here - certain types of food, such as dried pasta, rice, beans, grains, high proof alcohol, vinegars, and basically anything frozen to name a few, never spoil in the sense that they’re unsafe to eat.
Flavor, however, is an entirely different matter. Just ask anyone who has eaten freezer burnt food.
Pretty much any high proof alcohol will fall into this category. And, if it’s unopened, it should retain most of its flavor for a very long time. Once opened, however, it can deteriorate relatively quickly, depending on how it was stored.

Games@lemmy.world•Steam does the opposite of forcing Arbitration on its usersEnglish
6·1 year agoyeah, its hard to predict what will happen to it, especially after gabe steps down or dies, but depending on how much of the company is broadly owned by employees vs individuals, it can help to shield it from bad decisions. Unfortunately, we don’t know the exact numbers. If gabe + mike own 51+% then it could potentially lead to overriding employee will in a bad decision for money (either through their actions or through inheritance like you say). Or the employees could just collectively make a bad decision too.

Games@lemmy.world•Steam does the opposite of forcing Arbitration on its usersEnglish
68·1 year agoAFAIK, most of valve’s stock is held by employees, not private investors. It’s usually a pretty hard sell of “make the company you work at shittier to make more money”, especially since most of the employees probably know gabe personally (valve has less than 400 employees) and likely approve of his leadership.

there’s actually great resources for getting started online. There’s a site called start playing games dedicated to matching new people to a DM. Note that services like that cost money. There’s also the virtual tabletop roll20 which has a group finder for you to find a game. It will have a mix of free and paid games. Alternatively, you can crowdsource that such as on r/lfg on reddit (unfortunately the LFGs here on lemmy don’t seem to be active enough to find games), or through various discord servers, including the official D&D discord. Another that has reasonably active LFG type sections to try is the Fantasy grounds (another VTT) discord.
For in person play, you can also look in to local gaming stores that might run adventurer’s league, which is the sort of ‘official’ play wizards of the coast sanctions at local stores and at conventions.
