Most open source projects will have a donation page / link, so it relies on people feeling compelled to donate because the software provided is useful to them.

Lemmy for example has options for financially supporting its development. Some Lemmy instances also feature a link to a donation page to cover the hosting costs.

Some have an organisation behind it, like Firefox has the Mozilla Foundation to finance it. Actually it’s the other way around, see ahal’s comment below

The team behind VLC has a “for profit” branch that adapts the video software for companies, allowing them to also finance VLC’s development in addition to donations.

Exactly, so I’m pretty sure a professional photographer knows which way to orient a photo to share their vision, when Eliott Erwin crops a picture of a dog with its owner, it’s not at random, there are deliberate choices made before publishing, the photographer could have taken a picture of the subject on their left side, and reversed the picture to show them walking towards the right to achieve whatever vision they had

Well, in a way it doesn’t cost them anything because it’s already being broadcast on TV for free, since it’s the national / public TV

One user pointed out to me that they may geoblock you, so a VPN would be recommended.
