PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Valve Responds To Steam Machine's HDMI 2.1 Display Support Controversy [HW support is there, but "The HDMI forum" doesn’t allow with OpenSource drivers]English
1·6 days agoThe signal quality can be flaky. You need a good, short, hdmi “8k” cable for it to work reliably.

81·8 days agoCable Matters sells plenty of different DP->HDMI 2.1 adapters that work with VRR. The main issue here is that you won’t get CEC if you use those.

46·8 days agoFun fact, all of the audio codes are proprietary too. You won’t find a HDMI surround sound splitter on Aliexpress. Say no to HDMI, say no to E-ARC.

16·13 days agoI’d say there’s some differences between biking and gym in terms of whole body strength and flexibility, but it’s good exercise. Definitely more productive than driving.
I think one point that can still be made is that this schedule means your average day (averaging over weekends) contains 7 hours of work/commute and only 3.5 hours of hobbies/activities.
A move to a 30 hour work week would mean that you would only spend 5.5-6 hours a day working and get 5 hours an average day for hobbies/activities.

1·25 days agoOh definitely. I have a large TV because I understand that. I don’t know anyone else with a TV that actually sits that close though. Most people are gaming like 4-5 meters away.

3·25 days agoIf you have 20/20 vision, you need to sit 2 meters away from a 55" to be able to tell the pixels apart. You might see some improvement from 4K but it wont be that significant. If you are 3-4 meters away, you need a bigger TV if you want to start thinking about gaming in 4K.

16·25 days agoThe majority of gamers game at 1080p. Both on PCs, and especially on consoles. Most people’s TVs aren’t even big enough for people with average eyesight to see a difference between 1080p and 2160p.
So the question to ask is if the steam deck is too slow, because the steam machine at 1080p will solidly beat the steam deck at 800p.
If you want something faster for desktop, just build a matx mid tower with a 9070xt. It’ll cost double, but you’ll be able to game in 2160p.
