Especially when saying “no cheese” 8 times means you will definitely be getting cheese
I would’ve agreed with this a few years ago, but when you realize things can have subtle effects on our body that aren’t easy to measure or readily apparent, you shouldn’t fully trust something just because studies say it’s safe. A study can’t really show that “50 years of repeated exposure caused slightly more exhaustion,” for example.
However, we DO know tooth decay is a major health risk for our whole bodies. Avoiding a maybe possibly slightly harmful chemical isn’t stupid, but avoiding something that prevents known and documented dental harm and the effects that has on your entire body, that’s just letting fear override rational thinking.
It takes a “special” kind of person to take something so ingrained in culture and still say “I’m not gonna do that,” usually a slightly crazy and/or neurodivergent person. I think this is partly why there are so many “insane” vegans, because it’s self selecting for people who are outside the norm.
I don’t even mention to most people I’m vegan, usually just an excuse like “meat makes me feel sick” because the average person will think I’m going to give them a 20 minute lecture.
To anyone who is the vegan who will give the 20 minute lecture, please consider if your goal is actually animal welfare, you can hardly ever debate someone out of something they like. Instead, just show people easy dishes you made that they actually enjoy (pasta with spaghetti sauce, French fries, vegetable stir fry, roasted veggies with olive oil) and you’ll often find they start cooking more vegan food (or at least less meat), and also talk more positively about veganism
I appreciate your perspective on this as I have similar feelings/experiences, starting in middle school I didn’t have 1 friend who was a girl for the same reason as you. I wouldn’t worry about what’s “worse,” one or the other they’re both terrible experiences, and I’m sorry you had to go through it.
Sometimes very dangerous, as an example a company may pay for security updates for windows XP, but you won’t get these updates. Say someone takes a look at what changed, finds a buffer overflow or other easily exploited bug, embeds that in a program, and pays to have it bundled with some freeware. One of these exploits could even infect you just from visiting a webpage.
Security updates are annoying but they’re the one kind of update Microsoft is actually justified in pushing
Everything outside of my health is great, good relationship with my family, stable situation, generally good attitude towards life, but I got covid in 2021 and now just staying out of bed the whole day is basically impossible. A fun event passes and half the time I just feel completely blank, like having a good friend telling you something you find extremely interesting but you haven’t slept for 50 hours. Even watching a movie is just overwhelming and I need to take breaks. I sometimes feel like I’m already dead and I’m just lingering on. Half of my life feels like a dream, 40% feels like I’m just trying to get to tomorrow where I might feel conscious, and 10% feels almost normal. My whole family is excited about Christmas and I’m overwhelmed by the idea of staying out of bed long enough to say hello to my brothers…
https://ibb.co/pvk0HWv https://ibb.co/bsPRfyZ https://ibb.co/0Mxd8rr You were being a smartass and then got one-guyed. The community on lemmy seems generally positive with a few crazies, just like everywhere.
Look in that thread and there are plenty of people who ask “how will youtube keep the servers up without ads though?” with reasonable responses such as: torrent-esque video sharing people donating to creators and youtube taking a cut or reasonable issues like: ads cause me a lot of stress and I am not wealthy, does this mean I can never watch a video again? Or read an article or see any online content? Not wanting to support billion dollar megacorps
Getting responded to in kind by 1 guy is not a toxic community, everywhere I’ve seen people ask a question in a normal way 99% of the time they get normal responses
sadly if you try to be a good landlord and make a slim margin, you’ll get dumped a huge repair bill/tax increase/other expense and now you’re running the appartment at a loss. At that point you either sell it to a company willing to exploit it or you have to be less nice to your tenants and ignore repairs or charge more. Most people choose the first which is why we end up with terrible landlords.
aside: heard someone in that exact situation running low income housing, on a phone call with an expert talking to the government. The expert said “any prudent management would raise the rents the maximum allowed amount”
for things like this I just assume the person’s brain just exploded for a second. I could definitely see myself doing this with 2 hours of sleep, and feeling 100% sure you said try is also something a sleep-deprived person would do. Still sucks when it teaches you not to speak up though
Do you have any example of an “unpopular opinion” that has gotten you banned or any conservative banned? Also, probably the biggest reason I could see conservatives feeling like they’re being “silenced” is because half of their platform is based on being racist(sometimes unintentionally), anti-lgbtq, etc.
The difference being when conservatives say it, 99.999% of the time we see the actual reason they were banned was for saying something like “it sure would be unfortunate if someone accidentally dropped an axe on Nancy Pelosi’s head haha XD” as a figure with wide reach, or something similarly egregious.
Show me something similar happening here and I will also not take their complaints seriously.
I keep learning this exists and then instantly forgetting about it…
Very true, I have a friend who wants to lose weight and said “but eating makes me happy.” Easiest way to keep your current habits and lose weight is just add on going to the gym, and the more you go the more you can eat. Added bonus is no matter what happens you’ll just feel better in daily life.
I use an android app called kanji study to help learn/practice writing kanji. Once you have the basics down, writing characters helps a lot since it helps you recognize radicals that appear all the time (and helps a lot with remembering characters)

along with other replies generally you become more gullible/less able to think of alternative explanations as you age, so even some “obvious” scams look legit
While this is true, also consider the reason those trucks are necessary. If no one took a spork from taco bell, and used dishes at home instead, that truck would never need to come. Do this with many other non-essential items, and the impact starts becoming measurable. Using electric trucks for the essentials could eliminate that pollution entirely, though that last step is policy, not individual.
Here’s the best summary I could come up with for this meme: “The”
On the flip side of this, it makes me sad that using fancy words usually just makes you seem pretentious in normal conversations, which has made a lot of cool/interesting words unusable for me. Even words that used to be pretty common, like insipid, will have most people look at you like 🤨
