4·10 hours agoThis is the same concept as copying books… Even rewriting by hand without the approval of the author could be considered piracy.
Books were always about the content and never about the paper. Same goes for digital media.

Pop!_OS (Linux)@lemmy.world•Cosmic Officially Released with Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS!!English
8·1 day agoMe and my wife both started daily driving cosmic desktop sine alpha 7. My opinion as a 10 year linux user who uses a computer daily for (programming) work and home use: I use it on nixos - the distro that finally made me stop distro hopping. I found a distro that was robust and reliable enough I stopped distro hopping. Cosmic was this for my DE or WM what ever I was using at the time. Previously I had to constantly thinker to make my DE/WM constanly adapt, add plugins to behave well for my workflow. I wanted to use keybord for most stuff but I did not want for whole DE to feel broken when I had to use a mouse. Cosmic is something built the way DE is supposed to be built. Just right. All the options user wants are just there. And most of them enabled by default. The default experience was just sooo good. Even though I used alpha version (!) i felt this DE is the most polished and the least buggy experience I ever had on linux. Because the behavior using keyboard and mouse was just so good and natural. And I did not have to change anything for it to behave this way. Even with all the bugs that come with alpha realease this fealt the most polished linux experience I had in 10 years. This never happened to me on linux. I always had to install some strange plugins for the experience to be bearable. And since I am linux enthusiast I am also very happy with their technical choices. I just love it. It is system well designed.
And for opinion of my wife who was first time linux user. She uses this DE on popos and She is conductor so she has no technical knowledge I have and she used windows her whole life. She could not believe how productive you cam be on linux. What can be achieved only using keyboard. She absolutely enjoys using her computer now.
I do not think she would feal this way if she used Gnome or Unity or KDE. Or even with window managers like i3wm or awesomewm… I think even though she used buggy alpha release she was able to increase her productivity just because she could use her keyboard more (as compared when using windows or any other DE) and she did not have to go full hacker mode with i3 or any other tilling WM.
So I recommend cosmic DE becomes the new default DE for beginners. This will not only show them linux can be used the same way as linux. But it can be used way more efficiently.
Heck. Cosmic should probably become the default DE on most distributions.

61·3 days agoNot true. x^2 = 36 x=±sqrt(36)
This equation has two solutions. But the square root function itself is defined only as a positive answer. By having two anwsers it would not even be a function.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Every time a stranger has saved me from something they always dressed in the same "unusual" way. Is this actually weird though?English
5·16 days agoI noticed that by wearing a fedora (quite unusual where I live) I got used to standing out and people secretly watching me. So this helped me to not be shy to act and help when the people around me are just standing and watching. Even though I rarely wear a hat now I am first to help more often.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Parents, have you ever said something hurtful to your child that you "didn't mean to say"?English
5·17 days agoYour specific situation you will have to handle yourself (with a help of therapist and / or friends of course).
However I read a quote from therapist who also happened to be a father. It goes something like that:
It is impossible to not hurt and scar your children. Parents are only humans. And parenting is really really really hard. We crack some times. (Note some parents hurt and scar their kids way worse than the others. Also some parents are worse at being parents and some are just evil, etc…)
A kid is grown up at the time they learn to forgive their parents for their mistakes.
(Or even make peace with abuses if it was really bad)
As a parent or a person you cannot stop making mistakes. The only thing you can do is to apologize. It seems to me your mom did that. The rest is on you - to forgive her for this mistake. (There might be something deeper going on in your family - I am replying with the context I have)
If you need someone to talk to, you can DM me. However I will be replying when I have time ~ once a day.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do you personally believe in your religion?English
4·17 days agoI believe there is lots of important knowledge about morality etc. embedded inside religious books. This is why is is worth reading those. Also there is lots of shitty and immoral stuff i try to ignore. Why would I try to implement those.
The other important stuff is active community. A single person can only do so much good. But if you are doing good as a whole local community you can do project far bigger than you could pull off yourself.
So it was easy to decide to keep the religion I was raised in. This is the biggest religion with biggest community.
This is about my religious framework and why I have it. However I distinct between my religion and my personal believes. Personally I am ignostic (with I), so I think we almost never use the same definitions for God, Being, to believe, to exist,… I even hold an opinion, by what most atheists define what God is, most grown up Christians are atheists. And the other way around. I think we hold pretty similar believes but we use different meaning for same words.

Privacy@lemmy.world•WhatsApp to launch third-party chat integration in Europe soonEnglish
1·26 days agoI tried that too. But at some point I figured I communicate with most people over email and SMS. Which are objectively far worse technologies that any agency can use to spy on.
Especeally if we are comparing this to e2e whatsapp app. Even if it is backdoored, still less agencies have access to it as compred to SMS or email.

2·27 days agoAnd now they will not be able to control both ends. Previously it was just a buzzword. They are giving me a chance to control at lease one end. And now I will be able to convince my friends to migrate away from whatsapp… So whatsapp will control no ends of my communications.
zzffyfajzkzhnsweqm@sh.itjust.worksto
Privacy@lemmy.world•WhatsApp to launch third-party chat integration in Europe soonEnglish
1·27 days agoNo I have not.
You will only use one client app. The one you trust the most. One opensource, trusted and having its code regularly independently audited - like Signal. So in general this will improve my security.
Even if you account my contacts are using the official whatsapp app, that cannot be trusted since it is not audited by public.
Previously I had to use Whatsapp app to to talk with them. Not the other way around. So if Whatsapp app is backdoored this does not reduce security at all. While it improves convenience by a lot.
But now is way easier for me to convince my contacts to use apps that can be trusted. which will reduce the chance of my communication being backdoored and increase my security.

Privacy@lemmy.world•WhatsApp to launch third-party chat integration in Europe soonEnglish
3·28 days agoEverything is end to end encrypted. So conpmpromising any servers would mean nothing.
The issue is only if some client apps introduce a back door. Which is way easier to do in closed source apps - like Whatsapp as compared to opensource Signal. So in a sense this would increase security since you can now use more trusted client app…

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have a Child or Buy a Horse?English
141·3 months agoHuh. Strange opinions I read in the comments.
On moral decision: I will argue bringing a kind to this messed up world is a morally good thing. There have always been good and bad times. And we need people to make those good times. Well raised and well trained people. Even if our generation screwed up, we can at least equip the next generation with knowledge and love to fix what we could not. What about if the world and existence were beautiful and fun to experience? In that case no one would object you to bring a kid to this world. I will tell you a secret. World IS beautiful and fun. It is all about perspective. Well this fully depends on you seeing a glass half full and teaching your kids to see it the same way… Lots of people in the comments seeing this glass not just half empty but seeing it completely empty.
You can also live your life serving others or just serving yourself. It is always more beneficial for you to serve yourself. However serving other can be more rewarding. Serving others is always sacrificial. In case of raising a kid there are some really major sacrifices to be made including all you already mentioned. But this is also one of the best thing you can do for another person. For example even by volunteering you usually do not give people life, do everything for them until you prepare them for living their life on their own. You will have to sacrifice almost everything.
While having a kid will also have some benefits (eg. increased chance of not dying alone). You should not do this for yourself. Raising kids is about them not you.
I personally think if there are kids for adoption it would be morally better to adopt. Because you not only give a happy life to a kid. But you also save someone from a lot of struggle at the same time. However it would be still better to bring another happy and well raised kid to the world if you decide not to adopt (eg. If you feel you could not love someone else’s kid as much as your own)
On actual decision:
- Do what you think is right. Not what will benefit you the most. The empty side of the glass is empty because people decided to prioritize their own benefits over what is right. (You might figure out having a kid not the right thing for you)
- You should know no parent is ever ready to have kids. Parents are just kids having kids. What makes parents parents is a will to sacrifice and will to learn.
- If you decide to have a kid, you should first get your finances in order.
- if you decide to have a kid, you should marry first. To secure your kids future as much as possible.
- Remember having a kid is about them not you.
To setup kubernetes inside lxc you have to enable quite some capabilities inside host kernel and lxd containers that can be used to escalate privileges from beeing root in container to root in proxmox. Not completely sure but since even containerd containers share the same kernel, attacker might escalate directly from pod to proxmox host. But this last par I am not sure about.

“Script” in a computer programming sense. An algorithm. So general behavior is most likely predefined. So not a script in a sense that it always does the same thing. This just means its behavior is most likely described using “if” statements. Eg. “If oponent did this, respond with that…” Algorithm can also “remember” some actions and act based on that. However the AI is most probably not activeley learning from your actions. It has all the knowledge predefined.
Some more advanced algorithms utilize some self learning principles. Buy this is very rare in games since this is resource intensive.
But even machine learning is not AI. Even LLM is not AI. But at least LLM became a synonym for AI in recent years.
