Completely wrong target for GrapheneOS. The GrapheneOS demographics, which I belong to, isn’t interested in high-end phones. They want a no nonsense simple phone with lots of storage and security first design.

    • fancy AMOLED screen: don’t care
    • 5 fancy cameras: don’t care
    • super powerful CPU and GPU: don’t care
    • storage space: yes please, I have photos and music to store locally!

This will be harmful to GrapheneOS project. It will go like this: no one buys the phone because it’s too damn expensive and full of features the privacy needs like me don’t care about. Even fewer buy the phone with GrapheneOS pre-installed and it’s a total flop. Motorola stops the partnership saying “we did it and no one wanted it”. No other OEM wants to partner with GrapheneOS after that.

Yeah no, even the 300-350€ (don’t remember it exactly anymore) I spent on my Pixel 9a were overpriced to me, I don’t even need half of the storage, RAM and CPU speed in here. We really need way less capable but equally as secure phones, who the fuck needs that much computing power to browse websites and write on Signal?

I recently ordered a Pixel 10a. Wasn’t too sure about about the future with Motorola phones in terms of GrapheneOS. With that price tag, it looks like a better decision for now…

Well, this is defintely not good for the GrapheneOS project. they’ve already been criticized for being only accessible by techbros and people with sufficient resources to buy a Pixel. A lot of people were assuming a lower price from Motorola. This is crazy.

I just bought a pixel 10a open box for like $350.

Like I get some people are stuck on Walmart specials, but how cheap does it need to be before its not considered a purchase for the privileged by you?

Well, its not just the money, its the fact that it is a Google product. Many of us, outside the USA don’t trust anything that Google produces, including Android itself (which is why degoogled phones are a thing) nor do we want to fuel the techno fascists running the company.

Grapheme runs tests on googles firmware regularly.

If it was actively doing something it shouldnt, they’d notice.

You could argue there could be something hidden in the firmware for use by the state when they REALLY REALLY REALLY want to get into something, and are willing to blow a good backdoor on it. But that’s also something you deal with on any modern PC, unless you wanna party like its 2011 and run an old FX-Series AMD chip, or a librebooted machine with ME Cleaner. (See Intel ME/AMD PSP)

The pixel is still a product of Google that Google benefits from when you purchase it. Some if us want to avoid contributing to their power as much as we can. Not purchasing a Pixel one of those choices.

Android needs to be replaced as well. I still hold hope for mobile Linux.

Google doesn’t own the PC market.

I really hope that the Pixel 12’s will be supported again by GrapheneOS or a cheaper option will be made by Motorola. Otherwise I will have to keep my Pixel 10 with Graphene alive forever (?). I do not expect there to be a real second-hand market for this Device to get your hand on one for cheap.

And how do you finance the high and long lasting firmware maintenance required by Graphene OS, to stay secure? Is there any anouncement even suggesting that in a reasonable timeline or are you merely engaging in wishful thinking. I’d be surprised if they ever went below midrange with a GrapheneOS device.

Or it tells you how much the hardware costs without the manufacturer offsetting the price with the level of data collection and ads they can sell from it?

Or, more realistically, Motorola doesn’t move a ton of volume compared to Google, Samsung, or Apple so i imagine they aren’t getting amazing bulk pricing on high end parts for this

Buy a second hand or refurb pixel. That’s what I did. Google already got paid, sure, but you don’t give them anything more. It’s not perfect, but it’s an economical solution that doesn’t break the bank and still gets you security. At this point, if you don’t want big tech, may I suggest two tin cans and a string? if you do that, at least Del Monte doesn’t get the recycling deposit back on their empty green bean receptacles.

Almost all the other ones are reportedly worse at security than the stock OS, only Graphene is more apparently. At least according to their team, I know they trash Lineage and E a lot.
