I mean, the IDF can put two rounds in the head of any kid on the street and issue a press release claiming they just bagged Hamas’s Brigadier General. Who is going to argue with them? Al-Jazeera?

The main weapon that Hamas has against Israel is international opinion. The way Hamas wins the current war is by continuing to operate in heavily populated areas until the civilian death toll from fighting there becomes so large that Israel has to retreat in order to avoid losing US support.

Is your question about how this lopsided war, with its huge Palestinian civilian casualties and displaced population and destruction of any goodwill Israel had after Oct 7, is worse for Israel than if they had instead surgically taken out Hamas leadership and left civilians alone?

And I’d add how horrible it was when the IDF killed Israeli citizens who were escaped hostages trying to return home. I think one can hold the hostages and their families in the highest regard and with the deepest sympathies, and still understand that there’s something very wrong here.)
