Back in the same ol’ place again. Let’s see how we do with the second go 'round.
A while back I was watching a courtroom drama on TV, and at one point the protagonist lawyer was talking to his daughter about how they needed to keep separate from each other while on this case.
Daughter: “How separate?”
Protagonist: “Church-and-state separate.”
Me, in my head: “Okay, so separate on paper, but in practice, incredibly buddy-buddy.”
Daughter: “Okay, so extremely separate.”
Me, in my head: “I don’t know what I expected.”
Suspiciously black-looking priest …
Nah if you zoom in you see he’s got a beard.
What difference does that make?
Aside from his mutton chops he’s white as fuck.
Look at his chin. Look at his hands. Forehead. white.
Edit: for comparison, other political cartoons from the time period.

(for a little context, 1869 was a period where people were debating reconstruction and other odds and ends, like who has the right to vote, etc. They were absolutely racist fucks. these were just the ones I could reasonable conclude were from 1869-ish. at the top of results for ‘1869 political cartoons’.)
