We can upload images directly to Lemmy but that does increase the load on the instances. What other services do you recommend? Do you have a go to?
Catbox.moe
Also, when putting an image in a comment or text of a post use this format
![image alt text](https://image url)
It’s the same format to drop on a link, but you add a ! At the beginning. It will load the image right into the text instead of leaving a link
you dropped your crown, king.
can u help me fix this post for exemple, https://lemm.ee/post/792465 ? i didn’t know how to do it. thanks :)
It looks like you are linking to an article and that it’s working correctly. What is there to fix?
i meant if the image link added in the text. cant that be loaded ? or only the post link ?
It sounds like you’re looking for a link preview that includes an except and a featured thumbnail image. That’s not supported in Lemmy.
If you want to link directly to the image (aka hot linking), you need to grab the image URL and then link to that rather than the full article.
Note that while hot linking like that usually works, it’s often frowned upon unless the original site is specifically set up to handle it - a good example of a site for image sharing is Imgur. Here’s a good explanation: https://awesomelytechie.com/dont-hotlink/
thank you for clarifying. yea i mixed up the link preview idea. well, i will try to see my way around hotlinking. thank you.
If you wanna stay in-fediverse, you could post the pics on a Pixelfed instance and use that as the host. Just post the pic there, copy the direct URL to it, put it in the URL bar in a post here and it will show up as a normal picture instead of a link. Also Pixelfed allows unlisted pics, like if it’s stuff that would clutter up your profile.
That’s a nice suggestion!
Question from a newbie: if you happen to choose an unlucky server on pixelfed, and it gets closed after a while, all the pictures will just vanish, right?
I mean, nothing to worry about if you are hosting memes or other “need to be fresh” content, but if you are looking for something that can be relevant even in the future, maybe that’s a bit risky.
You’re probably right, yeah! In that case probably one of the other commenters’ suggestions would be a better choice, I think. I’m hoping the pixelfed stuff will catch on enough that at least some instances will be more likely to stick around, but it’s anyone’s guess if that happens.
That’s a good thread. Have bookmarked it for future reference.
I’ve been using http://bunkrr.su a lot recently as an alternative
If the image is from anywhere else on the internet, you can link it from there. I found myself downloading things out of habit. Idk about image hosting sites, they have a pretty unsustainable business model, so I doubt any particular one will be around in a few years.
What do you do with images that you want to share - for example, if you want to show off your awesome new keyboard in [email protected] ?
Upload it to any of the hundreds of image upload sites, and link it with ![](https://link.to.image)
Right! And my question: which image upload site do you recommend?
Imgur.io is pretty aight
memmy ios app default uploads to imgur
I thought they were deleting all non account anonymous content soon?
Nsfw too, I use freeimage.host for images and catbox.moe for videos now
yes, finally the right questions asked in this c/
I’m used to imgur and most screenshoting tools can work with it.
Pixelfed? IPFS?
I’m running my own instance.
Same, but I’m still thinking about the size of my database - and what to possibly recommend to users.
