I somehow only found out about this project last year. If anything could dethrone MAYA as my favorite hip-hop album of all time, it would have to be an even crazier, deconstructed club official tape of MAYA remixes, outtakes, and b-sides released for free to support Snowden and WikiLeaks.

Death Grips, Charlie XCX, 100gecs and basically every big left-of-Swift pop artist owes a hand to this era of MIA.

How do you feel about MIA, a British woman of Sri Lankan descent, going all American loony right wing?

Artist vs. The Art, basically. She always had a bit of ick, IIRC at this point she was married to the billionaire heir to the Hennessy fortune. Seems to have went off the deep end after the divorce when the (Obama-era) US Government barred her from entry (from seeing her son) and seized $X of funds from her US bank accounts based on a flimsy connection between her, her father, and the (US-determined) “terrorist” organization her father founded. I think it was at that point she got a hate-boner for Western liberalism (who she was already talkng potshots at early in her career, just in a less personal sense), got shafted hard by her label who butchered AIM and MATA into inoffensive pop trash (listen to OHMNI W2020 (2020) single or The Bells Collection (2023) if you don’t believe she’s still got it), and then was hospitalized with some severe illness (I’ve never cared enough to really put the details of it to memory), had a near-death experience and came back Christian.

How do I feel? I really don’t tbh. The works of hers that I love stand completely on their own and a lot of her “crazier” takes today track better than a lot of people think they do when you really look into her messaging
