My wife is from Mexico and I from the US. Living in California what I really dislike is that when I’m without her, other Hispanic people assume I know no Spanish and I always feel like they think of me as some racist Trump supporter (since I’m white). But when I’m with her we’re usually conversing in both English and Spanish so I’m considered less threatening.
I also think there’s just a male/female dynamic here too. When I walk our dogs in the neighborhood almost no one bothers to greet me or make conversation but when my wife’s with me it’s like everyone wants to be best friends.
