Walgreens is still closing stores in 2026. The company confirmed more closures are coming — and refused to say how many or where.

Sycamore Partners took Walgreens private in 2025 in a deal with an enterprise value of roughly $23.7 billion, financed with up to 83% debt — more than double the industry average of 41%. Senator Elizabeth Warren flagged the pharmacy-desert risk before the deal closed.

Sycamore never put a public answer on record. In February 2026, WARN filings showed 628 jobs cut: 469 at Deerfield HQ, 159 at a Houston warehouse closing June 1. The paper trail is there. The company just isn’t talking.

They cut way more hq jobs than what’s stated here.

I understand they are supposed to be cutting stores that don’t make profit to their liking. I am a nobody, but it kind of seems like that isn’t a huge surprise.

The money is in the retail, less in the pharmacy. Don’t think of them as pharmacies, think of them as a 7/11 with pills. You can buy liquor and lottery tickets at the one near me.

Seems odd to go to a so-called pharmacy and stroll out with a bottle of whiskey and a fat wad of scratch offs.
