There was a silver lining in that the backlash from ME being as terrible as it was is what finally convinced them to put the consumer editions on the NT kernel.
I’m not sure that’s how that happened. If memory serves, they were already working on xp at the time, but that started to slip the year 2000 deadline. So, in order to keep the OS revenue gravy train rolling, they quickly threw ME together to have something to release in the interim.
It’s funny how even Microsoft themselves seem to forget ME ever existed.
