The art on the header seems AI? Will AI run the anrchoworld of the future?

The complaints I see about AI is usually because of “the theft” and “the consent”. Anarchist thought usually is against the copyright and the intellectual property. This seems to be lost in all discussions. The problems are with capitalism.

I guess anarchist don’t believe you can prevent someone from polluting an area since you can’t control what people do? I guess I don’t know how I feel living downstream from someone who is free to throw their sewage in the river…

        Dramatic false equivalence?

If you would keep to the topic on copyright or intellectual property that would be great. In a movement that believes private, intellectual, property is theft then the extension to using that for the benefit of others is not a problem.

Well then I’m ok with that, although I live in Hollywood and know artist that rely on making their living via copyright and IP so I need to see how they would feel about it.

No, there is no such thing as “AI”.

As far as technologies that grifters call “AI”, I judge them on their pluses/minuses, CBA, how it’s used, etc. like any other technology b/c that’s all it is.

Will AI run the anrchoworld of the future?

There is no “AI”. But computer programs will hopefully continue to improve the lives of users, rather than promote war, genocide, prisons, capitalism, etc.

Not that the punk scene is the arbiter of anarchy, but I’m glad my scene has overwhelmingly rejected AI.

Will AI run the anrchoworld of the future?

Hell no. We will decide our own fates. “No gods, no masters” applies to machine masters too.

Anarchists do not have a universal position on if, or to what extent, “AI” will play a role in our future, although we all agree, by virtue of our shared anarchism, that “AI” will not be dictating our future to us. My personal views are that:

    1. I reject the terminology “AI” because these systems are not intelligent in the ways that people and some animals are. Using this term gives power to the capitalists who currently control the most powerful of these systems. I prefer a term like “large language model driven system” for the current class of large scale generative language algorithms, e.g. Claude, ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and the various local LLM models. (The “driven” part refers to what “AI” companies call “agentic” systems, i.e. LLMs are usually part of a bigger system that is capable of taking real actions…but “agentic” is also capitalist marketing that attempts to say that these machines have agency like sentient beings do.)
    2. Because LLM driven systems are not intelligent, they cannot be held accountable for the actions they take. The responsibility lies with the human(s) operating the LLM driven system.
    3. LLM driven systems can be incredibly helpful for people who choose to work in highly technical fields, in particular coding and mathematics, with the caveat that hallucination is a mathematically inevitable systematic characteristic of these machines. In particular, I use LLMs as a LaTeX assistant.
    4. LLM driven systems have been deployed at an ecologically unsustainable pace and forced upon the proletariat, who mostly do not want or need these systems.
    5. The majority of LLM systems are controlled by the capitalist class and, like everything controlled by the capitalist class, must be expropriated by the proletariat. A small way of fighting back against capitalist centralization is to run your own LLMs if you have the hardware and the technical need for a LLM.
    6. I personally am basically completely disinterested in imagery generated by image generation models without further refinement by a sentient being. No disrespect to people who like generating images on your own machines, if that makes you happy then more power to you, but it’s not my cup of tea. I personally value the continuous input of a real sentient being like myself in the art I consume.
    7. I would support replacing the header art in this community with a human-made image, although I don’t feel that strongly either way. Even if it wasn’t AI, it’s been that image for a long time, so I think we’re due an update. I think I’ve said this every time it’s come up, but I don’t think anyone has ever proposed a banner image in response. I’m not a mod so don’t ask me lol, and even if I was, I would not unilaterally change the banner art without checking with the community about it.
    8. I write all my comments and posts on Lemmy with my autistic meat brain without LLM assistance because it is fun to do so. Yes, I actually write like this 😆

I can just say, there will be atleast the anarchists from lemmy.dbzer0.com running their local, selfhosted AIs, doing genAI stuff and maybe also sharing their AI ressources with other less technical folks. There will probably also people that oppose any AI usage. But as long as there isnt an immediate conflict of interest, these two groups of people will be able to just coexist in peace.

Most anarchists that understand the technical basis of current AI technologies (and also many that don’t) are oppossed to its usage as decision making machine or economy planner.

Nah, you didn’t sound that way, no worries. If anything I came off as a bit of a butt in this thread. Sorry, person above me.

How do y’all clock these pics as AI without someone telling you? I find AI-gen prose really easy to spot, but unless I see a pic that looks like an overly-good photoshop (or has too many fingers), or has that airbrushed cartoon look, I just don’t know.

It’s kinda worrying that people can’t easily identify obvious AI generated images. It’s super obvious.

The “obvious art” is obvious. It has been found that the people are increasingly unable to see an AI face vs a real face. Eventually it will be indistinguishable from reality.

lemmy.dbzer0.com doesn’t represent anarchism. Members may declare themselves anarchists, and use their own AI, but that doesn’t represent the anarchist umbrella against AI; which is by in large the majority majority.

    Also, anarchism isn’t a movement, it’s a lifestyle.

      Also, anarchism isn’t a movement, it’s a lifestyle.

You are linking to an anarchist source, so I assume that statement wasnt made in bad faith. Calling anarchism a lifestyle is usually done by people that despise anarchism, because they believe its just aesthetics and doing punk stuff. If you would call it a way of life, I wouldnt have the same objections.

Do you call authoritarianism a way of life or a lifestyle?

Anarchism proclaims choice a maxim. Free to live under no hierarchies, free to choose to style one’s life. Others need nonsubscribe. In authoritarian dictī, there are no choice than accept the oppressors’ demands. The way of life is crippled, the style subservient.

What other ways of living do you object?

the only difference here being the choice to practice said ideology. Anarchists can readily praxis theirs, while authoritarians, only few can praxis theirs.

Most arguments against computer generated content is based on “IP” which anarchists reject.

When it comes to issues of the environment, efficiency, etc., the generated content becomes more problematic. But realistically the planet isn’t being destroyed by people generated images of witches, etc. It’s mostly a lib distraction in service of capital/IP. We have much bigger problems.

There’s a chapter on AFAQ with this exact question: https://anarchistfaq.org/afaq/sectionI.html#seci1

I.1 Isn’t libertarian socialism an oxymoron?

In a word, no. This question is often asked by those who have come across the so-called “libertarian” right. As discussed in section A.1.3, the word “libertarian” has been used by anarchists for far longer than the pro-free market right have been using it. In fact, anarchists have been using it as a synonym for anarchist for over 150 years, since 1858. In comparison, widespread use of the term by the so-called “libertarian” right dates from the 1970s in America (with, from the 1940s onwards, limited use by a few individuals). Indeed, outside of North America “libertarian” is still essentially used as an equivalent of “anarchist” and as a shortened version of “libertarian socialist.”
