    I was going to make a snide joke about how we’re wasting tax money to pay the salary of a person so they could make other people’s lives more miserable… but then I remember we pay for entire police agencies. The previous feels like an inconsequential par for course in comparison…

      I posit that this is not anti-homeless. It’s anti-human. Why wouldn’t a party goer be able to sit at 2am after the party? And early riser at 6am? Someone that missed the last bus taking a nap? Someone else with mobility problems? This arbitrary line makes life worse for anyone passing by.

        Most places have more support options than you think. The problem is often lack of knowledge of these programs, or unwillingness to follow the rules of them.

          Back when I was following my local city subreddit every few months there would be a “I’m about to be homeless what do I do” post. They were provided with all the city and county resources and every single time the OP would try those and get absolutely no help. The system was either full, out of resources, or the OP wasn’t poor enough since federal poverty guidelines haven’t been updated in forever.

          There’s virtually no help and what’s there is at its breaking point

            Your example shows that people are often unaware of the resources available to them.

            Whether or not the resources are at capacity will vary by location but doesn’t change the fact that public outreach is often very lacking.

          You think homeless people don’t know about homeless programs?

          Talking to a housing coordinator a few months ago, she said the problem was that there were no beds available and all she could offer was to put people on years-long waitlists.

            My wife worked in addiction counseling, so she dealt with a lot of homeless people.

            No, many people are unaware of all of the help that’s available for those who need it. A large part of her day to day was connecting people with the non-addiction related support services they were unaware of.

              “Support services” are not housing. And, yes, there are a lot of “support services” out there, the support largely being someone to talk to as part of society’s employment system for white women.

                  Housing is housing. But whatever you call it, if we are talking about housing, saying “there are a lot of support services available” is distinct from saying, “there is housing available.”

                  I am referencing a theory called the gender bribe, which says that white women are given roles in the white patriarchy contingent on their support for the white patriarchy and that many white women do this subconsciously, in contradiction to their explicitly stated goals and beliefs. See especially the woman-dominated fields of social work and education.

      Given the state of a lot of homeless shelters, you’re probably better off taking your chances on the street.
