Open source has become a safe harbor for far-right politics, from David Heinemeier Hansson's white-nationalist rhetoric and the Omarchy Foundation's $12 million in patron funding to so-called apolitical projects that treat marginalized contributors as political, and why a united boycott of complicit tech companies is our only way forward.
Anyone else know what’s up with including Framework at the end of the post? That seemed to come out of left field. I checked and nowhere else in the article is it mentioned, so it’s not clear at all what his beef with Framework is.
They sponsor a window manager called Hyprland, which is developed by some aggressively unwoke guy. When dealing with it Framework has blundered, babbling about a big tent instead of publicly asking the guy to stop being an idiot if he wants to keep receiving money.
I suspect people asking to boycot Framework tend to forget that people occasionally need to buy new laptops, and when doing so they have the choice between 1) a repairable laptop developed by a company supporting open source, and 2) a non-repairable laptop lining the pockets of people who are guaranteed to do more evil in the world than whoever develops some fucking Wayland window manager. But this is probably a dangerous take in these parts.
Edit: It seems the Framework also tweeted about Omarchy and some stuff. Not a great look, not sure if it’s boycot worthy either.
I both understand and also completely do not understand this shit.
Like you don’t think there are anti-woke nazi motherfuckers profiting within every country?
The hills people decide to die on are strange and in general the left likes cutting it’s own nose off.
It’s always a little strange to see people link the Hyprland toxicity post when so much of it wasn’t fact-checked by the author or was presented without the context to make it look worse.
Yeah. I don’t have the energy to read up on him too much but what I see reminds me more of socially awkward teenagers trying to be edgy than actual fascists. It seems to me it’s a person who needs guidance more than boycot and a cold shoulder. But then again I can’t be bothered to do my research and I’m sure a lot of people would be eager to tell me how wrong I am.
There was a bit of controversy when Framework promoted Omarchy and when prompted about it they didn’t respond strongly enough about DHH’s views. They also sponsored Hyprland which has their own controversies and it seems many tie the two projects together since it is the compositor that ships with Omarchy.
