That wouldn’t fix the problem of industrial scale slop plagiarism. Even if they had their own platform, like the folks running Nebula, all it’d take is the AI puppet to get an account there, steal the content and reupload their slopped shit to youtube.
You’re saying it yourself: the slop would end up on Youtube. The goal should be to build an audience off of youtube. A donating audience on the fediverse could be a replacement for their ad revenue on youtube, but they have to at least start putting their content on the fediverse. If they owned and instance federated, they could be in charge of which instances they federate with defederate from slop-instances. They’d have the power. On youtube, they have none.
What’s the point of moving out of YT if sloppers will slop anyway? “Oh, you have control of your content” - which isn’t enough to stop the plagiarism. The whole point of the video was showing how content was being stolen and regurgitated for the sloppers’ profit, having your own peertube instance won’t fix that, getting revenue outside YT, like a patreon, won’t fix that.
There is considerable backlash against AI, but that backlash is not enough to stop sloppers from doing this shit, there are still too many people who “don’t care” and watch anyway, which further incentivizes more of that shit to show up. As long as it remains profitable for the ai shit sloppers, the problem will remain
You can’t stop plagiarism, but you can change how you react to it. Simply posting on the same platform and hoping that you get the same amount of views (or more) is probably not going to work. Moving to another platform where you have more control, might.
If you knew that youtube had the most content but 90% of it was slop and that you had to question every video you watched, but that there was another platform where you could find less content but 90% of it was actually made by humans, which one would you pick?
We aren’t there yet, far from it, but we will never get there is all you do is go “sloppers will slop, might as well stay here”.
Sloppers will go where there is money to be made. The only real solution is giving no place where their shit can be profitable. I’m not saying “might as well stay here”, I’m saying that your solution doesn’t solve anything.
Suppose YT gets overrun with slop, people will migrate elsewhere, both content creators and viewers. Most CC will migrate where they can get the most viewership - which in turn helps them monetize it in some form. Wherever this is, I doubt it’ll offer the video hosting and streaming for free (video on demand requires fuckloads of storage and bandwidth), so someone has to foot the bill, likely the viewers by watching ads and being offered subscriptions. Once it’s possible to make money out of video content, guess who’ll show up?
