Dozens of people were arrested in New York City while protesting against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s participation in the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday.

Actors Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder, as well as activist and whistleblower Chelsea Manning, were among the protesters arrested during a sit-in that blocked a main road leading to the UN.

Handcuffed and escorted by a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer, Einbinder was recorded in a video shared on social media saying, “Netanyahu out of New York, no bombs on Lebanon, no bombs on Iran, stop the genocide.”

Nerdeen Kiswani, founder of Within Our Lifetime, a Palestinian-led community organisation, criticised Mamdani’s video, saying it was “a far cry from campaigning on arresting Netanyahu. Instead of arresting Netanyahu, the NYPD arrested the protesters.

“This is the exact opposite of what Mamdani ran on,” she wrote.

If Mamdani unilaterally orders the arrest of Netanyahu, America would invade New York.

He didn’t arrest protestors. The pigs did, and the pigs needed to be there regardless for the security of the hundreds of other diplomats, many of whom are against Netanyahu and Israel.

Your comment reminds me of the people who criticize a bare majority leader of acting like a dictator. Mamdani didn’t wave a magic wand that was able to suddenly replace how every single police department ran things the moment he was elected, just like there are plenty of state law enforcement agencies kneeling to federal orders when they should be heeding state orders. They also weren’t arrested for protesting Netanyahu, they were arrested for blocking a main road into the UN.

I really don’t see how pressuring the police to use less violent tactics is acting like a dictator. I mean I get what you’re saying but what other democratic lever do people have to change the behavior of the police other than the mayor’s office? Maybe ideally they should be under independent democratic control but that’s not the world we live in.

By the end of the day those people have already been arrested. Only thing that can be done, really, would be going forward, but just like the federal government not following the law, we need enforcement mechanisms to make things happen that are against the wishes of the people doing said things. And we really don’t have that right now, when the enforcement are the ones we are trying to restrain.

I dont see the pig union bowing to mamdani’s office without a fight every single time. Not in this climate at least.

            Love to be proven wrong.

While I agree with them that Netanyahu should be arrested, neither Mamdani nor the NYPD have the jurisdiction to do it.

They do. Trump can release Netanyahu shortly after but Mamdani has the jurisdiction to make the initial arrest for Netanyahu killing Americans.

Unfortunately I don’t think you are correct here. By being a diplomat attached to the UN Netanyahu would have diplomatic immunity while on an official visit. If he had gone to Times Square or something completely outside of the duties of his visit then there might be a case but he didn’t.

New York City shouldn’t arrest anyone for crimes committed entirely elsewhere absent an extradition request.

New York State shouldn’t arrest foreign diplomats since the federal government is responsible for interacting with diplomats.

The USA shouldn’t arrest any diplomat heading to the United Nations since the UN stops being useful if it’s not a place for hated enemies to talk

The only entity that should be expected to arrest someone at the UN for an ICC warrant is the UN itself. And they fucking should have, but that’s on them and not Mamdani, Hochul, or (sigh) Trump.

As much as I hate making excuses for politicians… Even if Mamdani ordered Netanyahu to be arrested, he’d just be released within two hours, and Mamdani would be the one arrested next. Or dead.

Then don’t campaign on it. Politicians who are are talk and no action are useless against genocide.

Apparently he can arrest people protesting against genocide though.

When he campaigns on it he is “a superhero who is going to rid the world of evil”, when he doesn’t do it he is “poor little Mamdani who has no power to do anything”. Leftists are just as susceptible to the cult of personality as reactionaries.

US is going to be the new Argentina. All the genocidal nationalist leaders and their supporters are going to move here after they get called out in their own countries.

The US is the “real” Argentina… forgot all the Nazi scientists you got working for you?

Unlike Argentina, that’s not a myth lol

The scientists mostly weren’t the problem. It was all the guys they recruited to start the CIA and FBI, etc that did the real damage. And the Argentina thing wasn’t a myth.

Ah, my bad, I was thinking in total Nazi + Nazi collaborators, the US takes the cake there, but yeah Argentina apparently got a lot of the big nazi bosses, thanks to Peron, despite having a smaller absolute number of nazis compared to the US.

And by myth I was thinking of the whole Hitler in the lighthouse thing lmao

So Mamdani won’t order NYPD to arrest Netanyahu, but either ordered or allowed to occur the arrest of the protestors?
