For the longest time, i thought this was the actual origin of the trope.
I pictured Checkov in his quarters showing Sulu around, then pointing to a gun on the wall and saying a bit about it. Then Kirk grabs it off the wall to fight an alien later in the episode, because he was near Checkov’s quarters I guess.
I was immensely disappointed when I found out this wasn’t the case.
