I’ve been working at my company for years. If my boss called in a panic and said there’s an emergency (he never does this), then I’d come in to be nice. I do long-term planning for after I’ve retired, just so my replacements are less frustrated by tech debt.
Foolish, maybe. But human organizations are made out of humans and we generally want to help each other, even when that tendency is being exploited.
Theres always an underlying exploitation by definition; your time is being bought for a flat fee, regardless of output unless theres a comission, and even then its less than youre worth also by definition.
That being said, small businesses operate differently and a lot of Americans (at least in my case) reject that simple, undeniable fact.
There are chill bosses that pass on more than others, but again, always a level of exploitation. The lesser-evils do deserve some praise, though.
