Something I learned from cycling: When you put effort into using it, the morning is this mysterious beast of free time. We often get used to waking up, doing two-three things, and then it’s noon.
If you consciously sleep early, wake up early, and maybe plan to go somewhere as soon as you’re up, you can be back home planning to shower at your normal time, practically seeing your half asleep self doomscrolling in your bed from a prior day. You could even put a whole gaming session before your workday, if your job starts late enough.
I usually do get a round or 2 in before work and then I cycle to work as well. My partner is a teacher and her getting up early compared to typical office working times is largely what pushed it. For a long time I would go back to sleep but never really got useful sleep out of it.
When I worked from home I could go to the beach for a swim before work. Changed jobs when they wanted me to commute by train to another job in office that I can commute to by bike. WFH is nice but I’m not totally against going in, just against going in by public transport on a regular basis. I don’t drive but that would be even worse.
I don’t swim as much or go on as many recreational bike rides now, but overall cycling to work is more exercise as its every day.
