I think it’s a dumb rule enforced only for some amorphous idea of “discipline” nowadays, though.

The facial hair thing started before they really let African people into the army as a way to ensure a good gas mask seal during WW1. I think it’s a dumb rule enforced only for some amorphous idea of “discipline” nowadays, though.
But gas masks are still a thing in the military.
