Green Energy@slrpnk.net•California zeroes out funding for world’s ‘largest virtual power plant’
5·8 months agoDive Brief:
- California lawmakers approved a sweeping energy package at the end of the legislative session that does not include funding to continue two grid reliability programs, including a virtual power plant advocates believe is the largest in the world.
- Earlier this year, the state faced a $12 billion budget shortfall, and the two programs were in limbo for months as legislators negotiated down to the wire. The bills awaiting Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature after the session closed Saturday include proposals aimed at bringing down energy costs, expanding the Western grid and codifying virtual power plants in longterm planning.
- Advocates say gutting the Demand Side Grid Support and Distributed Electricity Backup Assets programs threatens to undermine the state’s progress toward a more resilient grid that can respond to system stress by calling on batteries, electric vehicles, rooftop solar panels, smart thermostats and other energy resources that are increasingly common in homes, businesses and institutions.

Balcony Gardening@slrpnk.net•I'm about to give up my organic balcony gardening experiment. This is a cry for help.English
1·8 months agoDon’t be sorry! It is perfectlyh normal to be upset when you get hurt, I personally am quite phobic re: wasps and hornets, so I absolutely understand. Few hints:
- On two pics (the last one and the one before the cute kitty) those Alien looking elongated things are in fact ladybug larvae! Which is great news, since they are way more hungry for the aphids than the adult ones are. That’s a score for you! An old technique that’s recommended by people to attract more ladybugs is to tie some yellow ribbons, as this colour is supposed to attract them. While I haven’t experimented with it myself, I have a couple of friends who swear by it.
- Easy, practical and relatively non-hostile way to deter wasps that I can personally vouch for is putting up a fake nest up there - the critters are madly territorial and will not hang around it the place seems to be claimed by another clan already.
Also, well, don’t give up, try again, rinse and repeat. And try not to be bothered by people who give you their unsolicited moral lectures instead of actually trying to help.
Cheers, good luck, and keep us updated on your adventures!

Climate@slrpnk.net•Want to plant trees to offset fossil fuels? You’d need all of North and Central America, study finds5·10 months agoNo, I want to plant trees because it helps to have a resilient ecosystem that’s more safe in case of a cascade collapse. I want to plant trees because they provide shade in the summer. Because they improve the soil. Because they help prevent floods. Because they give birds food and shelter. Because they are fucking PRETTY.
Can we start thinking about the whole thing instead of acting as if i single problems that are not interconnected?
Plant some fucking trees, even if they are not just carbon sequestration batteries.

Fedibridge@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Smol fedi - how I think fediverse should workEnglish
2·10 months agoHi!
because it’s how you show people “you don’t need to subject yourself to the whims of a Nazi billionaire or the greedy pigboy aping him”.
I still think it’s better done on the case-by-case, and instance basis, as mentioned, Don’t talk about fediverse was realy meant as a provocation (and it’s working :P), I just think we would do better shifting the topic of conversation from technicals and infrastructure and apis to communities and content, because to be honest I believe it is already here.
I think it’s important to be aware of a few options, and be able to answer questions about apps, but I fully agree we shouldn’t advertise the Fediverse based on apps. Specially since you can always check the content without one, even from a phone.
💯 Absolutely. Apps are amazing, but people don’t want the app because it is shiny, but because of what it can give them. Community, topics, ‘content’.
people eventually migrate from the general purpose instances to more specific ones, as they find their own homes here.
I believe it is already happening, honestly, and I love it!

1·10 months agoHonestly? It is not a problem I have, and I’m really happy about that :P But yes, I think it’s very handy to have a quick reply like that, but as you probably already suspect, I avoid general meta topics like that, simply because I don’t really have much interest in Reddit itself :)
