I was thinking more like they just say it’s Star Trek but make the show identical to Firefly.
It was a reference about how Disco wasn’t anything like Trek other than they called it Star Trek. A similar thing was done with Foundation and Dirk Gently. It’s not like Dirk Gently was bad. I really liked it. But it had absolutely nothing in common with the books.
Captain Reynolds wouldn’t do well in Starfleet, though I suppose you could make him Maquis

Gotcha. Haven’t seen Discovery, so I didn’t realize it was not really a trek show
