My tendency seems to be owning my own business and freelancing until I die (until I get stable enough to build my own products). I’ve been trying to connect with more business-minded people–“average of 5 people” type of mentality. Currently it seems that the only way of doing this is LinkedIn.

But obviously, LinkedIn is creepy.

Any other people think this? How having a federated business networking platform would be awesome?

It’s a great idea! Would the ActivityPub protocol contain enough user information as-is? I think it does.

I’m using my Lemmy instance as a personal blog/extension of my LinkedIn. I control the instance and have it kind of locked down policy-wise.

Over time as I master the administration I will post maker projects and other personal projects. So the only thing that keeps you from doing it is how you use lemmy. LinkedIn is unique among “social” medias in that your verified real name and identity is associated with your profile. Nothing stops you from associating your real self with your lemmy account and completely controlling a single instance.

I’m pursuing a hybrid approach. I cross link my LinkedIn with my personal sites so people who find one can easily find the other. I’m at a stage in my career where recruiters actually are welcome because they bring genuine opportunities for my somewhat specialized background.

It’s all an experiment and it will take time to see if it’s worthwhile. In the meantime, I enjoy watching Lemmy grow and learning how to manage my own online persona.

Yes, LinkedIn is creepy, but I am not sure if federation would make it better or worse, and getting people to switch over would probably be challenging.

Na, I’m good. I never touch it, except to update my CV before I send it to recruiters. Don’t care for employee influencers.

With how much information about your location/job/career/relationship with other professionals on LinkedIn, I would rather to have 1 company I can trust to handle data/security/privacy concerns

On LinkedIn at least your profile is not public for EVERYONE to see

I do hope fediverse will mature and reputable instances established. For now, I don’t think LinkedIn have any competitors, let alone better security/privacy. I do trust Microsoft in that regards than say Google/Facebook/Amazon, or any instance owners right now

Why do you feel LinkedIn is creepy? Just curious. Out of all the social media presence I currently have LinkedIn seems to me like the only one that is actually benefiting me. I post very little on there unless I am promoting a professional achievement.

They state very plainly that they sell your data to advertisers.

I post there weekly (often blog articles I publish to provide value for people), I have thousands of connections (a lot of CEOs) over the past 7 years I’ve been on there and I have yet to make a connection that ends in even meager work. The paranoid of me thinks that it’s keeping me in a bubble because it’s cheaper to keep me in need.
