What kind of program has this internet-brain-rotted masculinity brought us? A public-health official who neglects fatal outbreaks of preventable diseases because he seems to believe that only the strong should survive. A Department of Defense, renamed the Department of War, that launches a needless war of choice in the Middle East. A government that props up the fossil-fuel industry (manly) while deliberately suppressing green alternatives (girly), leading to a catastrophic rise in energy prices when that war doesn’t go as planned. A president who imposed tariffs to bring back “manly jobs,” but only drove up inflation instead.
It’s hard to see how any of this has made men’s lives better. But maybe making other people’s lives worse is enough.
Unpopular opinion: Masculinity doesn’t exist. There’s feminine things and then there’s everything else.
Is a hammer masculine? What about a monster truck? What if you paint them pink?
See what I mean? The modern concept of masculinity—and certainly conservatives stance on it—is an invented thing that only serves to make feeble men feel special.
If you accept that nothing is masculine, then a whole lot of advertising, conservative takes, and weird, supposedly “manly” activities start to appear absurd. Because they are.
This seems to be a roundabout way of coming upon the idea of, like, defaults and privilege. Like how people will say the there’s “sexual orientations: straight and political”
You have a lot of down votes but I think there is philosophical merit to your statement.
Biologically “male” and “female” abilities and attributes have a massive overlap and are at worst bimodal distributions. There is no singular meaningful action that only one gender does. So you would naturally think that humans would be equal.
Except… Women give birth to new humans. In modern times we have enough scientific explanations to take some of the magic out of the fact that human life is created inside of women. This act is so philosophically terrifying and traumatic that it creates the “female” category unavoidably in the mind of anyone who even hears of it.
The “male” is something created out of lack. It’s an attempt to create a category by focusing on the differences between two entirely overlapping sets because the “female” is a category. Everything else, like patriarchy as a whole, flows from there.
At the end of the day everyone is just “people” and a bit less than half of us can create new life as a bonus feature. Everything else is a social construct.
Yes. Women have the biological means to perform just about any activity a man can do (two arms, two legs, a sapient brain, etc) , but there’s something only women can do.
Following this to its logical conclusion: If a woman can do it, it’s not masculine.
Hence my statement: Feminine things do exist (not because they’re a particular color, LOL). There’s a whole aisle of literal feminine products in every grocery store but there’s no “masculine products” section.
Getting someone pregnant is exclusive to people born male. Most clothing and shoe stores are divided into men’s and women’s sections. And there are men’s health and hygiene products in every grocery store and pharmacy I’ve been to.
What?
I think it’s a thought experiment.
Seems like it was labeled an unpopular opinion, but that’s why I asked either way.
