Every food commercial, advertisement, and packaging in the US is currently protein obsessed. I just bought 3 burritos, and the most noticeable thing on the entire package is its protein content. TV commercials about waffles are advertising that they have X amount of protein per serving. The products in my jobsite’s vending machine have protein all over every package.

Did America have a protein thing recently?

No one eats enough protein. It keeps you sated, and also helps retain and grow muscle if you exercise. For a country everyone calls fat, everyone SHOULD be having more of it.

Some things are true simultaneously here:

      • “Standard American diet” is very bad
      • The protein recommendations coming out of health/fitness circles have been largely overblown, and are related to a fairly recent new marketing push

The problem with the SAD isn’t necessarily a lack of protein, although cutting out a lot of garbage food and replacing it with healthier food would in many cases increase protein intake (but not necessarily by * that *much)
