Or something that goes a bit deeper onto each instance and explains them better? I have a mutual on mastodon that I recommended Lemmy to, and tried to link join-lemmy.org/instances, but it doesn’t really do much to warn about hexbear/lemmygrad/.ml/etc. Those instances are defederated from a LOT of lemmy and i don’t want my moot to sign up there and not even know that they’re not really experiencing the Lemmy experience that I’m recommending.

I don’t wanna start a war in the comments about instance dramas, I just wanna find a better resource to recommend Lemmy as a ‘reddit alternative’ -w-

Dude hexbear and grad giga suck, ml at least generally has more normal people but the admin is a tankie as well. Part of your experience of something includes whether there are insane hateful comments, what’s with the weird minimizing of “just different opinions?”

Go look at the thread of my instance defederating from hexbear, do you think all those people just hallucinated the toxicity? Ml is much better but does have a significantly higher portion of tankies who will minimize atrocities. No normal person wants to deal with that.

Nobody’s saying the creators of Lemmy (and therefore the admins of .ml) aren’t communists, but .ml itself is mostly tech/foss content and has no requirements for one’s own political views to make an account. Other instances like Hexbear explicitly describe themselves as “leftist” and do have a political focus.

So, this somehow gives the regime an apology to kill and starve their own people? Meanwhile some of the members of the party are living their proletariat lives on private islands. They are on their way to dismantle hierarchy for sure.

So you ignored the execution part for what purpose? And also Cuba is island without any connections to the mainland. north korea can buy supplies. I agree that all countries need independent economy without sanctions, so the dictatorships could naturally disolve and establish a real dictatorship of the proletariat - democracy or preferably direct democracy. Why no one of you tankies mention a true socialist that was elected by people (not put on the throne by soviets, or like bolsheviks just opressing and ignoring alternative parties like social-revolutionaries, that got the majority in учередительное собрание) like Salvodor Allende , who was killed during CIA-assisted coup.

Hot take: tankies are the main reason why social-democratic consensus ended.

It’s a social construct and used similay by libs how “woke” is used by conservatives as a thought terminating cliche. I’ve seen it used for anyone left of Bernie sanders. Libs and chuds use it to create a straw man. In this case by claiming that “tankies” love dictators that crush people with a tank… lol

People who love authoritarianism and intentionally skip over their atrocities, the term “tankie” refers to how the military (tanks) were used to crush the rebellions of many authoritarian regimes, notably, the Hungarian uprising in 1956 being crushed by the Warsaw Pact and the Tianamen square massacre in 1989 by the PRC.

It’s usually used to refer to supporters of the Soviet Union, Cuba, North Korea, etc. who deny all the bad, inhuman things about those states.

More people who kiss the toes of dictators. Those who ignore the atrocities of Stalin and similarly despicable figures, “tankie” as in the tanks used to silence civilian protests

“I don’t want to start a comment war, I just want to spew anticommunism while receiving zero pushback” isn’t going to work on Lemmy. You can block the instances and comments and posters, but this entire thing is built by communists. You will never have a liberal paradise in these parts.

FYI .ml is federated with almost every single instance. You’re just making shit up to get mad about.

The truth is that .ml doesn’t screen for ideology past a basic formality. However, many .ml posters have indeed studied enough Marxist-Leninism to recognize that the word “authoritarian” was perverted by imperialists to mean “communist” and is more of an indication that someone using it is clueless than it is a useful adjective.

It’s implied by making the distinction in the first place.

Liberals in leftist spaces and nazis in liberal spaces act the same way. You think you can outsmart your own affectations by not ‘saying the thing’ explicitly.

One doesn’t need to broadcast one’s views in some formal fashion to be criticized for them, nor do I need your approval to call people out for their statements being riddled with Capitalist-apologia. The dude literally has “tankie” in the title.

The OP said anticommunist things — they don’t have to admit to being an anticommunist for me to judge them for their statements and claims.

By your logic, one could literally spew the most insane fascist rhetoric imaginable, and as long as they don’t declare their views fascist, it would be a leap of faith to criticize their views. Utter intellectual juvenility.

You could point them to the instance chooser. It’s on every piefed instance but is decentralized so may be different on different instances, here’s piefed.social: https://piefed.social/auth/instance_chooser

Piefed has all the same content but a different feature set and worse app support, but app support is growing.

Piefed and Lemmy can both import your settings (including subscriptions) from another account.

Piefed can important Lemmy subscriptions/settings as well, but Lemmy can only do Lemmy I think.

You can’t bring your posts/comments but you don’t have to start from scratch.

Idk, I give everyone some grace at first until they come out with the most batshit opinion conceivable. It’s not every .ml user, but it’s usually an .ml user. And the communities are flooded with the worst .ml users.

Just today, I was banned and had all my comments deleted in a thread. What did I say? A commenter said that victims of Republican domestic policy deserve it because they live in a country that has done bad things to the global south. I pointed out that those domestic victims (e.g. immigrants) aren’t the same people who victimized the global south. They said I couldn’t fully trip them, and doubled down on the privilege of domestic victims. I said they were a sociopath and that’s literally the same argument people make to justify killing Palestinian kids. Banned and deleted.

Again, it’s not that every .ml user is an evil red fascist tankie, but a lot of them are and they flock together.

I brought the same energy I was given, which was not civil. The tell is that the uncivil comments of the .ml user were unaffected, and the comments I made which were civil were also removed.

If you’re interested, I can try to recall my exact comments. The first was, roughly, “Do you think the children crushed by the domestic machine are responsible for the pain inflicted on the global south?”

All that’s unfortunate and understandable, but for a long while I simply didn’t care what instances a user was from. My opinion was gradually turned by too many .ML users basically having the worst possible take upon something, making it extremely unpleasant to talk to them about whatever the subject was.

Again, I didn’t really care about the reputation stuff for a long while, and wanted to make my own decision on the matter. They kinda wound up making it for me.

I think it would be neat if somebody made a community-run list of stable Lemmy/Piefed communities and categorised them by their rules, where the servers are, etc.

As for now, I think it is best to recommend a few instances that you know are reliable. Push them towards more local instances. If they live in Canada, lemmy.ca, piefed.ca, lemmy.blahaj.zone, and piefed.blahaj.zone are good options, I know feddit.org (Lemmy) and feddit.online (Piefed) are both hosted in Germany. sopuli.xyz is hosted in Finland, piefed.nz in Kiwi land, etc.

Or perhaps instances that relate to their interests, like programming.dev or retrofed.com (both are pretty self-explanatory)

Hexbear user since a couple days of their launch before federation was a thing. The instances you’re knocking are older than every other instance, and the defeds were typically preemptive to the point where people on other instances usually have no fucking clue what they’re talking about.

Always makes this stuff bewildering, but we’ll be here with you or not.
