Or something that goes a bit deeper onto each instance and explains them better? I have a mutual on mastodon that I recommended Lemmy to, and tried to link join-lemmy.org/instances, but it doesn’t really do much to warn about hexbear/lemmygrad/.ml/etc. Those instances are defederated from a LOT of lemmy and i don’t want my moot to sign up there and not even know that they’re not really experiencing the Lemmy experience that I’m recommending.

I don’t wanna start a war in the comments about instance dramas, I just wanna find a better resource to recommend Lemmy as a ‘reddit alternative’ -w-

Dude hexbear and grad giga suck, ml at least generally has more normal people but the admin is a tankie as well. Part of your experience of something includes whether there are insane hateful comments, what’s with the weird minimizing of “just different opinions?”

Go look at the thread of my instance defederating from hexbear, do you think all those people just hallucinated the toxicity? Ml is much better but does have a significantly higher portion of tankies who will minimize atrocities. No normal person wants to deal with that.

Ml is more associated with tankies and the owner is a tankie. It’s like going to a bar that has 5% open nazis that is owned by a nazi. You do you but that is not just “different opinions.”

You’re comparing communists, who seek the liberation of the working classes, with Nazis, who seek the eradication of the “genetically impure” and full capitalist control. Hell yes I’ll go to a commie bar any day of the week.

Why do you keep equivocating tankie with communist? Wikipedia disagrees with you, every person I’ve seen you say this to disagrees with you, the entire first page of search results disagrees with you. The definition of communist does not include half the lines in the Wikipedia page or any of these other pages that define it. Any person that looks this up will not be using the definition of tankie = communist, so you are either equivocating or failing to communicate.

Tankie is a pejorative for those who support existing socialist states. This is a real group of people, usually associated with Marxism-Leninism but also some anarchists, social democrats, etc. fit that label as well. I just default to “communist” because I think it’s silly to continue the conversation based on a strawman.

Lemmy.ml is associated with Marxism-Leninism, and the owner is a Marxist-Leninist. Marxism-Leninism is the most historically and presently significant branch of socialist practice.
